Summary
“Undercover Mother” opens with an SVU sting on a Manhattan loft party, where Carisi poses as a customer and the squad stops a van delivering five underage girls. Their handler is Selena Cruz, whose son the squad once helped bring back from Mexico. One of the women arrested, Martha Thornhill of Calgary, insists she is not a trafficker: her daughter, Ariel, vanished from a Toronto cafe at 13, three years ago. Doubted by police, Martha followed Ariel’s trail through online sex ads to New York, posing as a madam, recording every pimp she dealt with and buying six girls their freedom with church donations. Ariel was due at the party, but her pimp, Timmer, kept her back as punishment.
Barba regards Martha as a trafficker and will consider leniency only if she cooperates. Pilar, a 16-year-old runaway, confirms that Timmer stomped Ariel in front of the other girls, and Selena, told that child services has her son, points the squad to a party house in Queens run by a madam named Tracy. Carisi loses Timmer’s van on a tail, but a beer delivery man describes the house’s special-event parties, and on Super Bowl Sunday the squad takes the house over, with Tracy cooperating and undercover officers posing as girls and clients. Timmer arrives, then a pimp known as the Bishop, and an armed standoff ends with everyone arrested, including the Bishop: Lt. Declan Murphy, nine months undercover inside the trade.
Murphy says Timmer beat Ariel and sold her to a trafficker called Johnny D. Martha wins over Ariel’s friend Nina, who says Timmer caught Ariel on the phone with Martha, beat her unconscious and the next morning took her to Johnny D, who keeps new girls chained for a week while pimps abuse them. The detectives tell Timmer he will be released alongside the Bishop, who believes Timmer set him up, and Timmer gives up Johnny D’s location. In the raid the squad finds three badly hurt girls and stops Johnny D as he holds broken glass to Ariel’s throat. Ariel is reunited with her mother. Murphy, who faces claims that he pimped girls himself, returns to custody to protect his cover.
Spoiler, the ending: Johnny D, whose name is John Drake, is denied bail and sent to federal custody to await trial. Later Warner visits Benson at home, off the record, to ask where her adoption of Noah stands: a familial DNA match shows that Johnny D is Noah’s biological father.
