Summary

“Surrendering Noah” opens with social worker Chantal Jackson recommending that Benson be approved to adopt Noah. Benson then reveals that Noah’s birth father, listed as unknown, is Johnny Drake, known as Johnny D, the sex trafficker the squad caught holding teenage Ariel Thornhill and other girls captive. Barba, trying Johnny D on 17 counts, urges her not to name him on the adoption papers, but she refuses to build her life with Noah on a lie. While a motion calling the case a vendetta over parental rights is pending, defense attorney Evan Braun offers that Johnny D will give up all claim to Noah in a plea deal; Barba pushes for one trafficking count, and Braun signals they might accept about ten years. Benson refuses, even after Barba warns that Johnny D could win prison visits with Noah either way.

Amaro signs up for the sergeant’s exam after Fin passes on it, but Tucker tells Benson the department sees Amaro as damaged goods and will never promote him; told this, Amaro throws away his study guide. The squad looks after the witnesses: Ariel, back in New York with her mother, Martha, and two cooperating witnesses from Sing Sing, Selena Cruz and the pimp Timmer, who sold Ariel to Johnny D. Braun cross-examines Benson about the adoption, and Johnny D taunts her about his son. While the guards transporting Selena and Timmer take a break, Selena slashes Timmer’s throat in the van and claims self-defense; a guard dating one of Johnny D’s pimps had slipped her the blade. Fearing for her son, Selena refuses to testify. Pilar Morenas tells the jury that Johnny D never hurt her and that she loves him. Braun withdraws his offer and files an emergency appeal to restore Johnny D’s parental rights and stop the adoption.

Ariel urges the other survivors to testify, and they describe being drugged, chained and raped. During Braun’s cross-examination of Ariel, an outburst in the gallery leads the judge to clear the room, and in the confusion Johnny D grabs a court officer’s gun. He kills one officer and wounds the judge and another officer; Amaro, shot in the liver and the knee, kills him with two shots to the chest.

Spoiler, the ending: With Noah’s birth father dead, Judge Ruth Linden approves the adoption, and Noah becomes Noah Porter Benson. At the celebration, Amaro, two weeks into physical therapy, says the department will use his knee to force him out and that he will retire on three-quarters pay and move to California to be near his children, Zara and Gil. Benson says she grew more in four years with him than in 12 with her old partner, and they toast to family.
