Summary
“Intimidation Game” opens with Benson telling Dr. Lindstrom she has started the paperwork to adopt Noah, though she worries about how his history will shape him. At a video game tournament, Rollins and Carisi are spending a Sunday off when Sarah Keller, 22, who works for developer Raina Punjabi, is groped and pushed down in a restroom by two young men who resent women in gaming. Raina, whose nonviolent strategy game Amazonian Warriors launches in two days, ignores the abuse she gets online, and her fiancé and investor, Steven Kaplan, offers their security team. Leslie Connolly, the former babysitter whose Glasgowman story is being made into a game, finds a forum post bragging about the assault. Carisi enlists him as an informant, poses as his programmer and arrests Gary and Zack, whom Sarah picks out of a lineup.
Online, the two become heroes. During a live interview, police storm Raina’s home after hoax hostage calls, a stunt known as swatting; she has also been doxxed and threatened with rape and murder if the launch goes ahead. She refuses to postpone or accept a visible police presence. At the launch, hecklers wave laser pointers, hackers seize the lighting and security systems, and a guard working with the attackers leads Raina out a back door to a waiting van. The squad finds the van abandoned with a logo from the shooter game Kill or Be Slaughtered, her bloody blouse and a video of her being assaulted.
A second video, in which Raina is forced to renounce gaming, is tagged to a Staten Island house, where Marissa Rossi learns that her son Anthony’s basement holds a camera, signs of the rape and an empty gun safe. Fin explains that in the game, rape is followed by a final kill-or-die stage. Raina calls Rollins from a garage near the Manhattan Bridge, and the squad and ESU go in braced for an ambush. Anthony gives up and blames his friends Brandon and Pierce. Fin, hidden out of sight like the “campers” gamers despise, ends the standoff in a shooting that puts him on administrative duty, though Benson calls it a good shoot.
Spoiler, the ending: One attacker takes a plea and the other wants a trial. Raina says she is leaving the game industry; reminded that she once said quitting would let her harassers win, she answers that they already have.
