Summary
“Vanity’s Bonfire” begins when one-year-old Tessa Leddy vanishes from a sandbox while her parents, Josie and Braden, are busy with work calls. A registered sex offender seen at the playground, Allen Clyde, says the girl left with her mother, a blond woman. Surveillance video shows such a woman carrying Tessa in the Leddys’ sling, and the nanny, Carmen Silva, knows her as a photographer who snaps babies in the park. The squad finds Dia Nobile at her loft caring for Tessa in a nursery much like the girl’s own. Dia insists she is the mother.
The Leddys then admit Tessa came from a surrogate, Erin Murphy, carrying Braden’s child under a private deal. A hospital confirms Dia delivered a girl the same week. Dia’s adoption papers and the surrogacy contract were both drawn up by Wendell Feeney, a Long Island injury lawyer who died recently and who turns out to be the Leddys’ cousin by marriage. His partner has no record of either deal, Erin Murphy was a slip-and-fall client, and none of the papers were ever filed. Dia names the father as Kent Webster, a law school dean on the short list for the Supreme Court, son of Judge Clark Webster. She says Kent promised she would get Tessa back once his wife, Jillian, who has a brain tumor, had died. Kent denies knowing her, but Dia confronts him at home and scratches him, leaving DNA. His teenage daughter, Hannah, says Dia had befriended her.
Tests prove Dia is Tessa’s mother and rule out Braden. Bluffed about a paternity match, Kent claims Dia must have taken his semen after a brief sexual encounter at a photo shoot. A family court judge hands Tessa to child services until a final hearing. The Leddys recall Feeney telling someone he called Your Honor that the job was done, and the squad learns Judge Webster once saved Feeney’s career by vacating a felony judgment. Kent denies everything until Hannah sees tabloid photos, arranged by Dia, of him kissing Dia that day. The judge then swears he has not spoken to Feeney in over a decade.
Dia is found bludgeoned with a heavy crystal, and Kent is caught searching her desk for sex tapes. Phone records and Warner’s timeline point to Jillian, who has a seizure and then confesses. The detectives doubt it: she could not lift a water pitcher, and Dia did not have the family’s new number, which suggests Hannah went to the loft.
Spoiler, the ending: Jillian begs to protect her daughter as her last act and pleads guilty to first-degree manslaughter while Hannah cries out for her. Tessa’s custody and any charges against Kent or his father are not resolved on screen.
