Summary

“Betrayal’s Climax” opens as Benson is sworn in as a sergeant while two of her detectives slip out to answer a call. John and Lydia Capshaw have come home from a wedding to a ransacked apartment, missing cash and jewelry, blood in their bedroom and no sign of their 16-year-old daughter, Avery. They point to her ex-boyfriend, Manny Montero, a scholarship student at the elite Hamilton high school who lives in a housing project with his grandmother, Rosa; the parents had ordered the couple apart. Finding signs that Manny runs with the BX9 gang, Amaro leans on gang member Wilfredo Diaz and tracks Manny down. Manny admits being at the house but says nothing else and is held on a marijuana charge.

Told by phone that Manny is dead, Avery goes over a roof edge despite Rollins’s pleas, but survives. She tells Benson three armed men forced their way in, held a gun on Manny, made him watch and raped her until dawn, then took him away. Prints, a pawned pair of Lydia’s earrings and online bragging lead to BX9 leader Carlos “O.G.” Hernandez, Miguel “Sandman” Castillo and Rigo Heredio, and Avery identifies them. The men claim Manny told them she was willing. Avery then confides that her body responded involuntarily during the attack; ashamed, she does not want to testify, though Benson assures her it was a reflex, not consent.

Detectives learn Manny joined BX9 to stop its members from mugging his grandmother, then botched a pharmacy robbery set up by a delivery driver who tipped the gang to oxycodone shipments; the rape was payback. Believing what he saw, Manny refuses to testify even after Avery pleads with him, and after the Capshaws are attacked in their car, they bar Avery from testifying. Amaro shows Manny that the gun he used at the pharmacy is the gang’s shared weapon, the one that killed his older brother, Jesus, two years ago. Manny admits he knew Hernandez’s crew was coming over and froze, then records a statement that includes an apology to Avery. Learning he knew, Avery feels betrayed.

Spoiler, the ending: Manny is then found hanged at Rikers despite protective custody, his tongue cut out. To use his recorded statement, Barba must prove the gang killed him to keep him from testifying. Detectives goad Hernandez’s girlfriend, Marisol Pavel, and his jailhouse call to her, which is recorded, boasts that his men took care of Manny. Barba refuses a plea unless Hernandez testifies against his gang; Hernandez says he will do his time and threatens Benson, who turns down protection. No verdict is shown. Avery, painting again, tells Benson she wishes she had told Manny she still loved him.
