Summary

“Gambler’s Fallacy” begins with Rollins telling the squad she is taking her dog to Niagara Falls. Instead she is at a blackjack table in an illegal club, $15,000 down, when a waitress tells management she is a cop. A manager who introduces himself as Declan O’Rourke searches her for a wire at gunpoint and says she must pass tests proving she is no informer before she can work off her debt.

The tests escalate: she learns when a precinct runs its ticket blitzes, then tails a juror in an insurance fraud trial, claims she lost her, and finds the club followed her anyway. Threatened with exposure, she is left alone with Declan in a back room. She also drives home Marcelo Guarana, a Brazilian diplomat deep in debt to the club; his wife, painter Beatriz Amarante, tells the club to stop calling. Amaro tracks her phone to the club, Benson tells him to back off, and Fin urges Rollins to walk away. For the club’s pregnant manager, Sondra Vaughn, Rollins signs a gun out of evidence under a retired detective’s name, killing a weapons charge against driver Carlos Riva.

Soon after, Beatriz is raped in her home, Marcelo is tied up and her paintings are taken. Rollins joins the case. Marcelo changes his story about the attacker’s mask, Beatriz refuses a rape kit, and DNA from the scene matches Carlos through an old misdemeanor plea. Sondra admits she ordered the attack as a message to Marcelo. Rollins tries to cover by passing off Carlos’s DNA to the lab as the victim’s lover’s. The squad traces the gun sign-out, the sample and street-camera footage to her; Fin insists on warning her, and Benson gives her until morning to turn herself in.

Instead Rollins disarms Declan, makes him summon his boss, art dealer Anton Nadari, and holds Sondra, who is carrying Nadari’s child, while demanding a passport and $1 million. When Nadari orders her killed, Declan draws on them both and identifies himself as Lt. Declan Murphy of the NYPD. A flashback shows that in the back room he turned her down, revealed he was an undercover Vice officer and made her his informant.

Spoiler, the ending: Murphy tells Benson and IAB Sgt. Cole Draper that Rollins has been his undercover since that night and that Nadari’s confession was recorded; Carlos will plead to first-degree rape and grand larceny, Nadari faces charges from money laundering to a police officer’s murder, and Sondra is cooperating. Murphy and Rollins both say they did not know about the rape in advance. Draper threatens to go upstairs, but Murphy insists Rollins keep her shield. Benson tells Rollins that only a staffing shortage keeps her from transferring her.
