Summary

“Gridiron Soldier” opens as Hudson University football coach Bill Becker welcomes Georgia high school star Cedric Jones, 18, for a recruiting weekend, complete with two hostesses, Zoe and Tanya, even though Cedric has quietly committed to Georgia Tech. Rollins, short of money from gambling, accepts a loan from her friend Nate Davis on the condition that she join him at a recovery meeting. Then Larry Jones, a former track teammate from her hometown of Loganville, comes to SVU: his nephew Cedric never caught his flight home.

Becker and Cedric’s assigned host, sophomore receiver Eddie Thorpe, last saw the boy at the recruiting dinner; Eddie suggests he had been drinking. A phone trace leads Amaro to a Chelsea gay bar, where Cedric punched a man named Freddy who tried to kiss him, then fled and was tasered by plainclothes officers. Freddy picks him out of a lineup. Benson keeps Rollins out of the interview, and Cedric tells Benson and Amaro that a cab driver dropped him there when he asked for a sports bar and that a fake ID had been left in his hotel room. Benson lets Rollins and Amaro keep digging but holds Cedric on the assault.

At Hudson, Amaro sees Eddie singled out in a brutal tackling drill. Ty Lee, a male cheerleader, admits the team set up a prank: Zoe and Tanya blindfolded Cedric with the promise of sex, and it was Ty who performed oral sex on him. Cedric breaks down but denies anything happened. Rollins calls it rape by deception, which New York law does not cover; prosecutors drop the hate-crime element, and the judge sets bail Cedric’s family cannot pay. Tanya calls it a joke, and players Bucky Dinucci and Jerome Fields insist it was consensual, though it happened in the gym with an audience.

Cedric then tries to hang himself at Rikers and breaks his neck, ending his football career. Tanya had visited first, sent by Becker, to remind him the team had a video. Becker shrugs off the detectives with talk of building toughness. In interrogation, Eddie sneers that Cedric is soft until Amaro draws out that, on Becker’s orders, two older players sexually assaulted Eddie with a broom handle in his freshman year. The detectives arrest Becker for that rape.

Spoiler, the ending: Freddy declines to press charges after Cedric apologizes, and Rollins tells Larry that at least four other players were assaulted or raped. Rollins repays Nate, claiming a lucky streak, and says she will skip the next meeting. Becker takes a plea, sparing Eddie a trial, but Eddie tells the detectives he is quitting football: he is gay, and he is not ready to spend a pro career in the closet.
