Summary
“Comic Perversion” opens at a college comedy night where Josh Galloway, a cable TV comic, tells rape jokes to a crowd of T.S.U. students. When Renee Clark of a campus anti-rape group protests, he brings her on stage and says she would get the joke if she were gang raped. Afterward two students from her dorm, Sean Brady and Chad Smith, grab and taunt her until she gets her whistle back and they flee. Barba says Galloway’s routine is protected speech. In his hotel penthouse, Galloway mocks the detectives and invites them to his next show, where he jokes about a drunk T.S.U. student he slept with the night before. After the set, Carly Rydell tells them she is that student and believes he raped her.
Carly, who helped organize the event, says she drank with Galloway, went to his hotel room and woke in the night to find him assaulting her while she told him to stop; in the morning he handed her a bag of gifts. A medical exam finds injuries, but Barba wants a second victim. A canceled booking leads to New Paltz, where Audrey Truffaut withdrew an accusation after receiving a diamond watch and signing a nondisclosure agreement. Her gift card lets detectives trace other cards to other women; some describe him as aggressive, but none will press charges. Pressed by Benson, Barba agrees to proceed, and Benson and Rollins arrest Galloway, who plays to the photographers while his lawyer, Rita Calhoun, calls the case censorship.
At trial Calhoun paints Carly as a heavy drinker, and Galloway, mocking the case online, posts a club-goer’s video of Carly flirting with him. The judge swaps out two jurors who saw it but refuses Barba’s request for a mistrial. Calling Benson as a witness, Calhoun gets her to concede gaps in Carly’s memory; it is Benson’s first testimony since Lewis’s trial, and Barba accuses her of pursuing a celebrity out of ego. Galloway testifies that the sex was consensual and defends his act as social satire.
Spoiler, the ending: Ignoring Benson’s warning, Renee approaches Galloway at a hotel bar, recording through a camera in her glasses. When she tries to leave his room, he attacks her until she fights him off and escapes. Barba threatens a new case for attempted rape and sexual assault, and Calhoun negotiates a plea: Galloway avoids jail but must register as a sex offender for ten years, and Renee’s video stays sealed. Barba tells Benson not to bring him cases like this. Later, Chicago detective Erin Lindsay comes to the squad room looking for a file on a rapist, and Benson relays kind words from Lindsay’s boss, Hank Voight.
Why it stands out
- Sophia Bush appears as Chicago P.D. detective Erin Lindsay, starting a crossover that continues in the Chicago P.D. episode “Conventions”; her scene is cut from the Netflix version.
- Skyler Day returns as Renee Clark, the rape survivor she played in Season 14’s “Girl Dishonored.”
- Benson tells Barba the trial is the first time she has testified since William Lewis’s trial.
