Summary

“Twenty-Five Acts” finds Cragen cleared of criminal charges but still not reinstated, and Harris reshuffles the squad: Benson now partners Rollins, Fin returns to Munch, and Amaro, who asked for the change, floats. Jocelyn Paley, credited author of the bestselling erotic novel Twenty-Five Acts, flirts with host Adam Cain on his talk show and goes home with him. He chokes her with his belt and anally rapes her while she begs him to stop. She tells Benson and Rollins it was not rape because she had invited him to dominate her, but agrees to a rape kit, which finds tearing and a ligature mark. Cain tells Munch and Fin it was consensual role-play from her book.

At a magazine party, Cain corners Jocelyn in an elevator, accuses her of going to the police and rapes her again. She agrees to press charges, and Harris brings in Rafael Barba, newly transferred from Brooklyn, who demands her whole history. Cain uses his monologue to announce the accusation, so the detectives arrest him at the studio, and he is held without bail as a Canadian citizen with the means to flee. A former intern, Katie, admits Cain hurt her once he had a belt in his hands but will not testify. Searching Jocelyn’s college in Maryland for the man behind the book, Amaro notices that a passage echoes an article by her adviser, Professor Kathleen Dobson, who recently bought a $285,000 harpsichord. Jocelyn admits Dobson wrote the novel and paid her 10 percent to front it, which means she lied to the grand jury. When she tries to drop the case, Barba warns he would charge her with perjury.

At trial Jocelyn explains why she lent her name, but Cain’s lawyer plays her flirtatious interview to paint her as a liar. Dobson, under subpoena, confirms she wrote every word. On the stand Cain insists Jocelyn wanted rough sex, until Barba hands him a belt and goads him into demonstrating how hard he pulled it, then shows the jury a photo of Jocelyn’s bruised throat.

Spoiler, the ending: With the jury out for three days, Harris announces that Cragen is returning to the squad. The jury convicts Cain of first-degree rape. Jocelyn, who must give back her royalties, asks Barba what she should do now, and he tells her that America loves a comeback.
