Summary

“Reasonable Doubt” begins on the set of New York Hustle, a cable drama run by Emmy-winning producer Frank Maddox, where detectives tell him his eight-year-old daughter, Chelsea, may have been sexually abused. Her pediatrician reported it, and his ex-wife, actress Catherine Summers, has recorded a video of Chelsea saying her father undressed her in the laundry room of Catherine’s apartment and touched her. Frank, who left Catherine after an affair with her youngest sister, Rose, calls the claim revenge and says he and Chelsea only played chess, adding that he avoids the laundry room because he fears spiders.

Benson and Amaro persuade a reluctant Catherine to let them talk to Chelsea, who repeats her account. The nanny, Dohna, says Frank suggested she step outside to smoke and that she came back to see the two leaving the laundry room with Chelsea’s dress unbuttoned. Nude photos Frank took of Rose at 18 then appear on a gossip site, and middle sister Mavis tells Fin and Rollins that her nanny cams exposed the affair and that Frank knew the laundry room had none. Faced with his hair and fingerprints there, Frank admits he lifted Chelsea off the running washer. After Frank defends himself in a TV interview, Catherine storms his set to confront Rose, then tells Murphy she wants to go after Frank and will let Chelsea testify.

At trial, defense attorney Lester Cohen gets Chelsea to say she practiced what to say with her mother, and he shows the jury a figurine Catherine sent Frank of a woman tearing out her own heart. Dohna now remembers only chess. Murphy asks Rollins whether she has a blind spot for powerful men. Frank charms the courtroom on the stand. Benson then visits Mavis, who says Frank raped her at 13 at a producer’s party in Los Angeles, after giving her a part on one of his shows. Mavis admits she leaked Rose’s photos and tells her story publicly, saying everyone who stayed silent shares the blame.

Spoiler, the ending: Before Barba can cross-examine him, Frank skips court; despite surrendering his passport he has flown to France on a private jet, using dual citizenship, and gives an interview from Paris with Rose beside him, denying everything. Barba waives cross and goes straight to summation, and the jury convicts Frank in absentia of first-degree sexual abuse. The squad escorts Catherine and Chelsea through the press, reflecting that whatever the truth, the girl’s future looks hard.
