Summary
“Assaulting Reality” begins on the live broadcast of the dating show Heart’s Desire, where host John Valentine plays night-vision footage of contestant Melanie Connor in the Dream Suite with Ryan Ledder, the tennis pro she and Gigi Danson are competing for. Melanie, who says she is a virgin, remembers none of it and asks on air whether Ryan raped her before the show cuts away. With viewers calling in, Benson sends detectives to the house. Co-producer Lizzie Bauer insists the show is scripted, but Melanie says she woke up sore with her underwear on the floor and that executive producers Jeffrey and Regina Prince told her she must have wanted it. Rollins takes her for a rape kit, which finds abrasions and condom lubricant.
Ryan calls the night consensual, and the Princes show Benson an unaired morning-after interview in which Melanie praised him as a gentleman. Then Ryan, brought in by his mother, Tammy, admits he left the suite after Melanie talked about waiting for marriage, and the producers concede that someone else was in the footage they aired. Production shuts down and the cast is questioned in the house. Contestant Graham Turco says he passed out drunk, and Gigi says Lizzie told her Ryan was free and she spent the night with him. Melanie storms in announcing she caught chlamydia from her rapist, setting off a brawl. TARU finds no video of anyone entering the suite after Ryan left, yet someone is in Melanie’s bed at 2 a.m. The Princes then produce newly found footage showing Graham, and Barba warns them about evidence tampering.
Graham insists Melanie never said no and says he told Lizzie the next day. Fin arrests him as a show camera rolls, and his test matches Melanie’s strain of chlamydia. Before the grand jury meets, the Princes air a special that presents them as the investigators who caught the rapist, using hidden cameras they wore and cameras in Melanie’s hotel room, and blames Lizzie for the cover-up. The squad turns to Lizzie, who admits the Princes told her to take the footage off the server and let everyone think it was Ryan. She confronts them while secretly filming, and they dismiss the rape as not their problem.
Spoiler, the ending: The Princes plead guilty to a single felony count of evidence tampering, a charge that likely means no prison time but ends their television careers, and Lizzie avoids a felony charge because she cooperated. Graham pleads guilty, so Melanie does not have to testify. Her mother drives in from Idaho to take her home, and Melanie admits she truly thought Ryan would propose in the finale.
