Summary

“Real Fake News” opens with Congressman Luke Bolton waiting in Benson’s office. Since his emails were hacked, an online rumor has claimed he buys underage girls from a ring hidden in the basement of the Coral Dragon, a Chinese restaurant, and he asks SVU to show it is false. While detectives tour the place with its owner, Eugene Lee, a believer named Malcolm Barnstable bursts in with a rifle, demands to see the captive girls and fires a shot before he is disarmed. The building has no basement. The story comes from TheEndlessTruth.com, a one-man site run by Ron Duca, who reads codes into Bolton’s emails and points to supplier Ronald Fleming, jailed decades ago for statutory rape.

A reader of the site then finds a real child trafficking page on the dark web. Computer Crimes traces a buyer’s message to Bolton’s computer, which holds child pornography, but he was in Washington whenever the messages went out, so the squad concludes it was planted. Seeking the source of the leak, the squad subpoenas Duca’s computer; Judge Lisa Peck rejects his claim of a reporter’s privilege. Duca retaliates by posting photos of Benson and Rollins and suggesting their children are payoffs from the ring, and as readers call for DNA tests, Lucy Huston takes Noah and Jesse to New Jersey under police escort.

Duca’s drive leads to Raj Garg, a hacker already in custody, who admits an anonymous client paid him to hack Bolton, feed Duca the emails and plant the images, and that he found the trafficking site on Fleming’s computer. Caught with images and two recent orders for girls, Fleming agrees to set up a buy at his store, but as the girl arrives he shoots himself with a hidden gun, grazing his head. The driver flees; the detectives chase and arrest him and rescue Marian, a girl from El Salvador. Using Street View, she finds the house near Astoria Park where a man called Jerry keeps her and four other girls, and the squad arrests Jerry and frees them from a locked basement.

Spoiler, the ending: The girls, lured from Central America by promises of jobs as nannies, will get care before going home. Benson gives Duca until the end of the day to retract his posts about Noah and Jesse or face child pornography charges, and the site drops them while still targeting Bolton and the restaurant. Lucy brings Noah back. Then Benson is called to the Coral Dragon: Bolton came to lunch with his teenage daughter and a photographer to show it was safe, and a gunman who took the girl for one of the ring’s victims shot him. The episode ends without saying whether Bolton survives.
