Summary
“Eternal Relief from Pain” opens with Rollins hearing from her younger sister, Kim, for the first time in three years: Kim is on parole, has failed a drug test and now has a son. Soon after, she leaves the toddler, Mason, with a stranger in a pizza shop and overdoses in the restroom, and he is placed with Child Services. Kim admits she quit her bipolar medication and got hooked on painkillers after an infected Caesarean. Hoping for a deal, she says her doctor, orthopedist Paul Capezio, sells prescriptions and, once she could not pay, demanded sex for oxycodone a dozen times or more.
Fin distrusts Kim, but Benson backs the case. Rollins, whose knee really is swollen, poses as a patient sent by Kim, and Capezio is arrested in his exam room. His assistant turns over records of at least 12 women he never charged. The squad keeps the DEA out so the women are treated as rape victims, and Sex Crimes Bureau Chief Vanessa Hadid squeezes Capezio for more. Tamin, posing as his temporary receptionist, is courted by Tiffany Reynolds, a former adult-film actress who sells painkillers for Harrington Pharma and says happy doctors prescribe more. Hadid, a college friend of the company’s heir, Trey Harrington, blames a rogue sales team.
At the launch of Ephaxion, Harrington’s new long-acting painkiller, Tiffany takes Tamin and an orthopedist, Dr. Brian Gold, to a hotel suite and mentions hidden cameras before detectives burst in. Facing charges, Tiffany says the practice came from above and gets Benson into a company benefit. Meanwhile their father, Jim, drives up from Georgia at Kim’s call, a family court judge gives Rollins temporary custody of Mason on condition that her home stays drug- and alcohol-free, and that evening Rollins finds Jim collapsed from pills and alcohol. Paramedics revive him with Narcan.
At the benefit, Benson, posing as a doctor opening ten pain clinics, gets sales supervisor Rick Rudolph to discuss stock options and bonuses. Hadid then tells Trey that two of his guests are police. The squad fears a betrayal, but Hadid is wearing a wire, and Trey admits pushing the drugs hard for market share and asks her to spy on the case in return for a job. As a witness, she hands his arraignment to Carisi.
Spoiler, the ending: Jim pulls out his IV and walks out of the hospital, leaving a note for his daughters. Shaken by his overdose, Kim asks to be sent back to prison upstate, saying it is the only way she will get clean, and Rollins’s mother plans to move to Rockland County to care for Mason. Rollins tells Benson that no one can outrun family.
