Summary

“Dead Ball” opens as Paolo Rocha, the Brazilian star of New York’s Kings soccer team, scores a winning goal and lands a new $50 million contract. Visiting reporter Nellie Kramer interviews him in his hotel suite, and once he sends his business manager, Antonio Campos, and his agent, Tim Mondale, out of the room, she tells SVU, he grabbed her and raped her. Her recorder caught part of the struggle. Rocha says they had a passionate affair eight years earlier and calls her complaint a shakedown, then mocks her on a podcast. Nellie reveals that Rocha is the father of her son, a secret he has since uncovered, and when he threatens to seek custody she withdraws and flies home to London.

Benson keeps digging. Rocha’s ex-wife, Simone, defends him despite their $10 million divorce settlement, but her mother recalls catching Rocha half-undressed with Simone’s yoga teacher, Ebony Jones, who says she pepper-sprayed him when he followed her into the pool house. Rhonda Barnes, a court clerk and old friend of Fin’s, finds 12 civil sexual assault suits against Rocha, all settled except one filed two days earlier. Trainers, a masseuse and a physical therapist tell similar stories but are bound by nondisclosure agreements. Rocha’s lawyer then presents statements from four women accusing SVU of harassment, and Chief McGrath, pressed by 1PP, promises the women will be left alone. Benson tells Rocha she does not fear him.

Rocha’s personal bank records show quarterly cash withdrawals since June 2021 matching his settlement payments, and Fin and Rollins confront Antonio’s wife, Marcía, after Rocha hands her an envelope. She refuses to talk, but her daughter, Ana, now 17, tells a detective posing as a fan that she and Rocha began a sexual relationship when she was 16. Told about Ana and the payments, Antonio confronts Rocha at his penthouse while detectives listen in. Rocha admits the sex and insists Ana wanted it, and Antonio pulls a gun he once hid for Rocha and fires a shot before the detectives disarm him.

Spoiler, the ending: Rocha is arrested for sexually abusing a minor. His lawyer pushes for a misdemeanor, but the charge stays third-degree rape, and Rocha pleads guilty with no jail time, ten years’ probation and registration as a sex offender. Carisi charges Antonio only with reckless endangerment, which should mean probation. Benson visits Ana, who still says she wanted Rocha; Benson explains how men like him groom girls her age and tells her she has been there herself.
