Summary

“Tunnel Blind” opens with the squad celebrating the baptism of Nicky, the infant son of Carisi and Rollins. Carisi’s cousin Steve flirts with Benson, and Fin raises a glass to Munch. The same afternoon, 15-year-old Maddie Flynn disappears from a store while shopping with her parents, Eileen and Peter, each of whom thought she was with the other. When Eileen shows Benson a photo taken that morning, Benson realizes it is the girl she saw sitting in a delivery van as she drove out of the Battery Tunnel on her way home from the church, the sun in her eyes. Chief McGrath orders her to keep that from the parents and the press until it is confirmed, and gives the squad 24 hours.

Officers find Maddie’s phone on the Brooklyn side of the tunnel, and Pennsylvania troopers find an abandoned energy-drink van that was reported stolen in Providence the day before. A bracelet Maddie left behind is found inside, and the lab matches hair from the van to her. A man who photographs girls at her soccer practice, Gordon Franks, is searched without result. Then a worker on a cheap horror film turns over a latex sex doll, bought as a prop, that looks exactly like Maddie. The squad raids the seller’s warehouse and finds a best-selling underage doll called “The Birthday Girl,” modeled on a birthday photo from Eileen’s Instagram account.

Talking it over with Rollins, now a professor, Benson concludes that the abductor may be one of the doll’s buyers. After one buyer’s wife learns he has hidden a doll in a closet, another, Hal Crawford, runs from the squad. He admits that when a chat-room friend named Mark realized the doll depicted a real girl, he paid a man $8,000 to take her, then tried to call it off too late. TARU traces the man’s phone to a motel, where the squad finds not Maddie but another girl overdosing in a bathtub and revives her with Narcan. She is Tanya Garcia, missing for more than a year from Paramus, New Jersey. With Bergen County SVU detective Sloane Parrish, Benson learns that Tanya’s captor, “George from Canada,” met her on a long-distance Amtrak train, got her hooked on fentanyl, and returned with Maddie and the cash, saying he could not take both girls.

Spoiler, the ending: Tanya is reunited with her mother, and the department holds a press conference to announce her rescue. Eileen interrupts it, shouting that Benson promised to find her daughter; Benson answers that she is still working the case, and Peter pulls Eileen away. Maddie is still missing when the episode ends.
