Summary

“Truth Embargo” finds Benson still fixed on Maddie Flynn, to the point of yanking open the door of a stranger’s energy-drink van. FBI Agent Harrison Clay arrives to coordinate the search, because she was carried across state lines, and asks Benson to join his Child Abduction Response Team while the Bureau’s analysts profile “George from Canada.” Meanwhile, a masked crowd of teenagers loots a boutique. A saleswoman, Jenny, is groped, and Natalie Ross, who was trying on swimsuits for her honeymoon, is found hiding in a stockroom closet. At the hospital she says a young man in a mask pushed her into a dressing room and raped her. Her rape kit yields no DNA.

Footage from Bruno’s contact at Major Case shows the attacker removing his mask, and a livestream posted by looter Travis Butler shows him with the same young man. Travis is arrested for the robbery but says he does not know him. Jenny picks out her groper from mugshots after a Major Case raid, but Natalie, who says she never saw her attacker’s face, asks whether the arrested teens are really guilty. While the squad questions a fence called Crispy, a group of teenagers storms the precinct; Officer Tiffany Gomez draws her gun on them, and Benson orders her to lower it. Travis is among those arrested. Facing several felonies, he names the rapist as Jay Watson, a friend since fifth grade. Wearing a wire, he gets only a vague admission from Jay, but Natalie picks Jay out of a lineup.

Jay’s lawyer, Mason Carter, points to the lack of physical evidence. The squad realizes that CSU missed the hygienic liner from Natalie’s swimsuit; it is recovered, and the lab finds Jay’s DNA on it, though Carter suggests on cross-examination that it was planted. Natalie’s fiancée, Brooke Jaffit, tells Benson they doubt Jay can get a fair trial. On the stand, Natalie does not identify him. She tells Carisi and Benson that as a child she dared her brother Yves, who is from Cameroon, to steal gum; she was sent home with a warning, while he was arrested and given a record.

Spoiler, the ending: After Carisi and Benson talk with her, Natalie returns to court and identifies Jay, and she holds firm when Carter suggests that guilt about her brother, not her memory, is driving her. That night Carter tells Carisi his client wants a plea. Jay admits the rape, saying he has always felt invisible, and Carisi tells him he will serve time but still have a life afterward. Benson agrees to a drink with Carisi if he helps her read the profile of Maddie’s kidnapper.
