Summary

“Prima Nocta” begins on Amanda Rollins’s first day without work since she turned down tenure at Fordham. Visiting Benson at the precinct, she tags along when Bruno reports a runaway bride, locked in a church dressing room, who will talk only to SVU. Jenna Chapman, who stopped her wedding to Philip Sutton at the altar, says she was raped at 3 a.m. at her parents’ townhouse, where she slept alone by tradition. The man, Black and with rough hands, came through an open window, took her nightgown and the bedding, and told her she would remember him.

Jenna’s rape kit matches an unsolved Brooklyn rape six months earlier, also the night before a wedding. Rollins likens it to the medieval custom said to give a lord the first night with every newly married woman on his land. The earlier victim, ER nurse Darcy Hamlin, recalls the stripped bed and the same parting words, which she never told police or her husband. Fin has Rollins requalify with her gun. A detective from uptown tells Curry about a bride at the Park Milano Hotel a year ago who asked about reporting a rape, then changed her mind. Benson and Fin call on Breena Richards with a cover story about a hotel robbery; she later seeks Benson out alone and tells her about the rape, that her son is not her husband’s, and that she had seen the man at a flower wholesaler.

The wholesaler’s handyman, Leon Wallace, who helps with big orders for tips, claims he was home with his landlady, Agatha Pritchard, who backs him and blocks the detectives from taking his hairbrush. With no grounds for a DNA order, Carisi and Rollins pose as a couple marrying the next day, and Carisi pays Wallace to deliver flowers to Rollins’s door that night. Wearing a wire, Rollins coaxes him into a drink; when the door shuts, Carisi starts to go in, but Wallace walks out, and Rollins has his DNA under her fingertips and on a glass.

Spoiler, the ending: The DNA matches all three rapes. Having joined the sting, Carisi cannot prosecute but stays involved. Jenna, who never saw the man’s face, picks out Wallace’s voice at a lineup, and Breena comes forward to make a visual identification and file a report. Facing up to 100 years, Wallace says he grew tired of waiting for his own best day; his lawyer accepts a deal that still needs the Brooklyn DA’s approval. Benson returns something Rollins left at her old desk, tells her there is no desk for her now, and urges her to work out what will make her happy instead of using SVU as a safety net.
