Summary
“Fractured” opens in Det. Kate Silva’s third week on the squad, as Benson drives her to a team session at the firing range and mentions that Silva’s father is a longtime cop and deputy commissioner. That night, Shelli Henson, Damon Reynolds and Elodie Whitfield, pre-law students at the University of New York, sleep together while their fourth roommate, Teddy Hall, is out. Hours later an intruder knocks Damon unconscious at the door, beats Shelli to death with a hammer and rapes Elodie in the hallway. Teddy finds them around 3 a.m. and phones his father rather than 911. Elodie describes a white man about their age but never saw his face.
A camera hidden in Shelli’s smoke detector recorded the threesome but was switched off before the attack. Teddy admits he saw the three together through the chained door and felt shut out, but a chess hustler says Teddy played him in the park until after 3 a.m. TARU then finds a second user with access to the camera: Sam Ellis, Shelli’s study partner, who says she asked him to install it. Picking him up sets off a student protest in Washington Square Park that ends with ten arrests. Sam watched the threesome footage six times, the last an hour before the murder, and a campus call-box camera shows him at 2:15 a.m. carrying something wrapped in a dish towel and walking away from Shelli’s building, not home from the library as he claimed. Retracing his route home, Velasco and Silva recover the hammer from a homeless man who pulled it out of a bucket.
Sam is tried for murder, rape and assault. His prints are on the hammer, but no one can identify him, and his lawyer says he found it on his walk and threw it away for public safety; she also presses Teddy on the stand about his jealousy. Elodie then mentions that Shelli had been going to a women’s empowerment group, Rise and Radiate, where Benson obtains a private video Shelli recorded the day before she died, vowing to stop being afraid to refuse people, starting with Sam. The judge admits it over a hearsay objection as evidence of her state of mind.
Spoiler, the ending: Sam testifies that Shelli was learning to set boundaries with everyone. Under cross-examination Carisi gets him to admit he once asked her out and that she turned him down again after class on her last morning, hours before he watched her with her roommates. Sam explodes, then sobs that he is sorry. The jury convicts him. Elodie, taking time off from school, thanks Benson and Carisi and says she, Damon and Teddy plan to share an apartment next year.
