Summary

“The Grid Plan” follows Megan Wallace, an Iowa woman alone in New York for a week of Broadway shows, who is raped in an alcove off 45th Street near Times Square while walking back from a bar. A theater usher finds her and calls 911. She tells Benson that a well-dressed white man in his 30s, pulling a black suitcase, grabbed her and then came back afterward for a bottle he had left on the ground. The SANE nurse collects plenty of evidence, and Megan admits she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis two weeks earlier and has not told her husband, Richard. A passerby from the chorus of “Gypsy” tells Fin the pair looked like two people hooking up.

Traffic cameras show the man throwing the bottle onto a theater marquee, and CSU retrieves it: an Australian Shiraz worth about $1,000. A bartender recalls a liquor rep trying to sell him a case and hands over a security still. Megan, meanwhile, canvasses Times Square on her own. Benson calls it displacement, tells her that her own father was a rapist, and warns that interfering is a crime. Hours later Megan texts the squad from a bar where she is chatting with the man, Gerard Ridley, a 32-year-old wine rep from Jersey City. When he does not recognize her, she hits him, and Silva arrests her; Benson voids the arrest and drives her to her hotel. With his lawyer, Christine Vega, Ridley admits the sex but says Megan came on to him.

Carisi charges first-degree rape anyway. Ridley’s former girlfriend Celia Fowler says he ignored her refusal in grad school and her campus misconduct complaint went nowhere, but Carisi cannot use her as a Molineux witness because the pattern differs. Ridley gets $25,000 bail and surrenders his passport. At trial Vega questions Benson about Megan’s arrest. Cross-examining Megan, she wins the judge’s permission to raise her diagnosis of secondary progressive MS as going to her state of mind, and suggests Megan claimed rape to hide casual sex from her husband. Richard learns of the illness in the courtroom, and Megan says she is done.

Spoiler, the ending: Overnight Richard forgives her and agrees to see her doctor with her, and Benson urges Megan to answer the stories in the papers back home. On redirect she admits hiding the diagnosis but insists Ridley raped her and that she has never been unfaithful. Carisi’s closing calls the use of her illness a second violation. The jury convicts Ridley of first-degree rape, and he is remanded. Before flying home, Megan tells Benson the city still feels magical.
