Summary

“Post-Rage” opens with Benson taking Velasco for a drink that turns into a surprise party: she has recommended him for promotion to Detective Second Grade. That night psychiatrist Dr. Gretchen Stewart answers her office buzzer with her gun in hand and is attacked; her assistant later finds her beaten and raped, with a blanket laid over her, which Benson reads as a post-rage comedown. The intruder forced the door with a pry bar, a 9 mm round was fired, and Gretchen’s gun is missing, as are about a week of pages from her session notebook dating from the holidays. Her friend Dr. Gary Schwartz, who walked her home from dinner, says she had described a troubling couple: futures trader Anthony Fierro, who has two domestic violence arrests, and his wife.

After eye surgery by Dr. Darby Wilder, Gretchen tells Benson and Curry the man pressed his thumbs into her eyes and names Fierro as a patient made paranoid by ketamine, whose wife had obtained a restraining order. When Fin and Velasco move on Fierro in a highway traffic jam, he fires at them, runs to the railing and goes over onto a car below; he dies before reaching the hospital. Velasco is cleared, but the gun was not Gretchen’s, and Fierro’s wife, Anne, points to a hotel receipt; cameras confirm he never left the hotel that night.

Of the patients from the missing week, only a “Keith Sparks,” seen once for a free consultation, cannot be found. Then emergency psychiatrist Dr. Lauren Wright is raped and beaten to death in her community center office, her eyes gouged and her computer stolen; a patient traced through her book notes confesses but is plainly delusional. A ViCAP search turns up the December murder of therapist Maureen Burgess in Danbury, Connecticut. Her son says she discounted fees for referrals, which leads Curry and Fin to Mindy Davis, who referred a coworker, Ted Schramm. Gretchen identifies his photo as Keith Sparks, and the squad arrests him at a Midtown car rental garage.

Spoiler, the ending: Benson pitches the interrogation to Schramm as free therapy. With Fin beside her, he describes the killer in the third person as a lifelong psychiatric patient punishing the therapists who failed him, then admits he did not want to do it. His apartment holds Gretchen’s missing pages and Dr. Wright’s computer. Gretchen vows to keep helping people. Schramm pleads not guilty and plans an insanity defense, which the prosecution expects to defeat. At a ceremony Velasco is made Detective Second Grade, and Benson praises his leadership.
