Summary

“Rorschach” begins when FBI Agent Harrison Clay asks Benson to help with a Rockland County case: Los Angeles travel influencers Ellie Hughes and Chris Becker were found at a campground off the Appalachian Trail two days earlier. Ellie, found wearing only a towel, with a severe head wound, is in a coma, and Chris survived two stab wounds from his own pocketknife, one near his heart. No rape kit has been done. Chris tells Benson and Clay that after they had sex, Ellie went to the camp shower, and he found a long-haired, bearded man standing over her with a rock, who took his knife and stabbed him. Ellie’s mother, Laura, believes Ellie squeezes her hand, but the neurosurgeon calls it a reflex and raises ending life support.

Bruno and Silva, a former homicide detective, inspect the campsite with the local police chief and find gouges in a tree. Ellie’s rape kit holds Chris’s semen and another man’s saliva in her hair. Ellie’s college roommate, Kayla, says the couple had been bickering about a traffic stop and that Ellie texted her from a nearby bar, which leads to bartender Danny O’Brien, who plied Ellie with free whiskey that night and admits spitting on her when she left; he is arrested, then freed when his girlfriend backs his alibi. Chris now recalls whiskey on his attacker’s breath, and his mother, Virginia, cuts the interview short. The squad traces the stop to Georgia, where a trooper’s body camera shows a bruise on Ellie’s arm that she blamed on hiking.

Raw footage from the couple’s phones shows Chris slapping Ellie the day before the stop. When the knife comes back from Quantico it fits the tree marks, and Silva and Bruno work out that Chris stabbed himself by running at the tree with the blade braced against it. At her bedside, Ellie squeezes Benson’s hand when asked whether Chris attacked her. Chris checks out of the hospital before he can be arrested, and the squad finds him hiding in the bed of his mother’s truck; both are arrested.

Spoiler, the ending: Confronted by Benson with the videos, Chris admits hitting Ellie with the rock after she came back smelling of alcohol and he assumed she had cheated. Benson says the sex that night was not consensual and was meant to show who was in control, and Chris says he stabbed himself because he could not live without her. Silva tells Bruno she moved to SVU because as a child she saw a woman attacked on the street, a woman later found raped and murdered. Benson tells the unresponsive Ellie that Chris is going away; whether Ellie recovers is not shown.
