Summary
“Tenfold” opens with Wallen Sipes, new to sex work and working without a pimp, giving cash to another woman, Jade Walker, so Jade can quit early on a slow night. Wallen quotes Ecclesiastes about bread cast on the water. Later she is choked from behind, dragged between parked cars and raped, and an officer finds Bruno’s card in her purse. Fin and Bruno, who met her on an earlier Bronx case, find her at the hospital, where she insists she has quit the stroll and resists a rape kit. Curry and Silva canvass the scene and find a broken heel and a stolen electric car whose cameras may have caught the attack.
The kit holds semen from three men, and Benson tells Fin and Bruno to earn Wallen’s trust. Over breakfast she admits the work pays half her mother’s rent and her GED classes at Hunter College, and describes an earlier customer who turned rough when she refused anal sex. Jade names him as Miguel from the Bronx, who drives an old champagne-colored car patched with gray filler, and plate readers lead to Miguel Rivera, an auto shop worker. The car video hides the attacker’s face, but his shirt is missing the button Wallen tore off in Miguel’s car. Miguel admits paying for sex, denies the rape and is alibied by his sister, Tiana; with nothing found in his car, Carisi has only a solicitation charge.
A woman on the stroll tells Fin and Bruno that Miguel once tried to strangle her with his belt, and the squad finds two earlier reported attacks dropped after Tiana gave him alibis. Shown the evidence, Tiana, a seamstress, admits she recently sewed a button back on his shirt and hands over a bandanna and a belt with Wallen’s DNA on the buckle. Miguel takes a plea. Meanwhile Carisi presses Benson about Timothy Cottle, a substitute teacher he caught staring at his young daughter. His investigators find an old complaint, and Benson warns against punishing someone for a crime he has not committed. After Cottle loses his job, he confronts them, admits he is attracted to young girls, says he has never acted on it and asks for help.
Spoiler, the ending: Miguel faces at least ten years for the attack on Wallen, and Tiana’s grand jury testimony leads prosecutors in Queens and the Bronx to reopen the earlier cases. Benson finds Cottle a treatment group and tells Carisi she is proud of him for not hitting the man. Wallen introduces Fin and Bruno to her baby son, Freddie, explaining she held back for fear of child services, and the detectives offer to look for a scholarship for her.
Why it stands out
- Ciara Monique returns as Wallen Sipes, whom Fin and Bruno first helped in the Season 24 episode “Blood Out.”
- Carisi’s worry about Timothy Cottle (Ari Brand) carries over from “Constricted,” earlier this season.
