Summary

“False Idols” opens at a bookstore event for bestselling novelist Claire Morgan, where her former assistant, Leah Henning, stabs Claire’s husband, Stuart, in the chest. Officers from the 11th Precinct bring Leah to SVU because she says Stuart raped her. Fin, back after being jumped off duty, assures Benson he is fit for full duty. Leah tells Benson she lived with the Morgans for two years and that Stuart raped her many times, but she never told Claire, whom she worshipped. Stuart calls Leah an obsessed fan, and the squad finds a sealed order of protection the couple got after she broke into their home.

Rollins, a devoted reader of Claire’s novels, explains her pull on fans. The Morgans’ former chef, Nicole Sandoval, recalls seeing a dazed Leah in her underwear with Stuart in her bedroom and texting her boyfriend about it; Stuart fired her the next day. Carisi brings in Brian Moss, a law school friend, to represent Leah so she can waive arraignment, but Moss then blocks any cooperation without a deal. Claire tells Benson and Rollins that Leah’s claim is false and that such claims hurt genuine victims. Bruno finds another former assistant, Alex Corbin, who says Stuart raped her repeatedly, broke her collarbone and pushed her into an abortion, and that Claire knew but was told it was an affair. Stuart is arrested for raping both women.

Captain Downes of the 11th and Executive ADA Nolan Price want Leah prosecuted, but DA Baxter, hearing Benson and Carisi, settles on house arrest, probation and therapy. Leah then admits she once tried to tell Claire and wore a tank top to show her bruises, which Claire ignored. At his arraignment Stuart pleads guilty and reads an apology claiming Claire knew nothing until the week before. Carisi needs proof of an overt act to charge Claire. Recordings kept by her biographer, Jacob Engel, catch Claire telling Stuart in May 2022 that she has found him a new outlet who starts next week; Leah was first paid that June. Claire is arrested in front of reporters and fans.

At trial, Leah testifies that Claire singled her out at a book club and drew out her weaknesses, though she agrees on cross-examination that she hid the abuse from Claire. Under Carisi’s questioning, Claire admits she marked Leah as the woman Stuart could pursue because she considered her replaceable, and never warned her. During the trial, Fin, who lost his gun when he was attacked, tells Benson he needs more time off; she assures him his place is waiting.

Spoiler, the ending: The jury acquits Claire of witness tampering but convicts her on both counts of conspiracy to commit rape.
