Summary

“Cornered” opens with Carisi’s usual stop at a deli near the courthouse, where he trades slang with the clerk, Ali Imran. Late for a meeting with Benson and defense attorney April Andrews, he goes back for birthday flowers for his paralegal and walks into an armed robbery. Boyd Lynch, paroled the day before, and his young accomplice, Deonte Mosley, make Carisi and two recent graduates, Tess Milburn and Elizabeth Alden, withdraw cash at the deli’s ATM, strip Carisi of his watch and wedding ring, and order Ali to call the owner in to open the safe. Benson, looking for Carisi, sees him through the door, calls in a hostage situation and phones Rollins, now a sergeant in the Intelligence Division.

Boyd suspects Carisi of alerting the police and takes the women to the walk-in cooler. Carisi warns Deonte, left to guard him, that accomplice liability makes him answerable for whatever Boyd does. When Ali defies Deonte and answers the ringing deli phone, Deonte shoots him, and Carisi presses on the wound. Outside, Rollins tells the commanders she is Carisi’s wife; when she pushes to call his phone, the negotiator, Lt. Mack Ford, overrules her and she is ordered away from the command post. Through Tess’s hidden phone, Carisi gives the gunmen’s names. Boyd finds the phone, drags Tess to the back and rapes her. Ali dies despite Carisi’s efforts, and detectives learn Boyd served time for rape and robbery. Having read Carisi’s phone and learned that he once worked for Benson, the gunmen demand a ride to Teterboro, a private plane to the Solomon Islands, a destination Carisi himself suggested, and Benson in exchange for Carisi.

Benson insists on Tess’s release first, and Tess is brought out to her. Over Rollins’s objection, Benson gives up her gun and walks in to take Carisi’s place, but Carisi refuses to go and fights Boyd. As Boyd turns on him, Deonte aims at Boyd and asks whether protecting someone else counts as self-defense; when Carisi says yes, Deonte shoots and kills Boyd. Benson takes his gun and orders him to the floor, and Deonte protests that Carisi promised to help him.

Spoiler, the ending: Deonte is led out in handcuffs and claims self-defense. Rollins arranges for her mother to keep the children overnight, telling Carisi he is not ready to see them. Carisi declines Benson’s offer to put him in touch with her therapist and says he will be fine; Rollins and Benson agree that he is not.
