Summary
“Townhouse Incident” begins with Benson’s nanny, Lucy Huston, worried about Lisa Crivello, the mother of another boy she minds: Lisa sent her away that morning with red marks on her neck while her husband shouted inside. Benson stops by the family’s brownstone and is pulled in at gunpoint. Joe Utley, his girlfriend Roxie Volkov and her brother Ralph, a truck driver fired by Richard Crivello’s grocery chain, are holding the family and beating Richard to find cash. Benson says she is a police officer; they take her gun and phone, and Joe uses a photo of Noah to threaten her. Finding no safe, Ralph takes Lisa to empty a safe deposit box.
Fin, Carisi and Dodds, who think Benson is at a DNA conference, catch a serial push-in rapist, Pierson Dawes, on a Chelsea rooftop. In the brownstone, Joe learns of that arrest and drags 16-year-old Tess into another room and rapes her; Roxie strikes Benson when she tries to stop it, then frees her to calm Tess’s young brother, Luca. Allowed to answer Lucy, Benson texts about a play date with “William Lewis,” the man who once abducted her. Lucy brings the text to the squad, and Barba, who spent the morning at the conference, never saw Benson there. Fin and Carisi pose as truant officers at the door; Tess sends them away, and ESU seals off the block.
Joe makes Benson call Dodds, then asks for someone at the NYPD who cares whether she lives; she names IAB’s Ed Tucker, now a captain and a trained negotiator. When Benson tells Tucker that Lisa has stepped out, he works out that a third suspect is at a bank, and Joe demands a car, $1 million, a helicopter and a jet. Fin and Carisi arrest Ralph. Barba warns Ralph that any death inside means felony murder, and Ralph names Joe, a dishonorably discharged Special Forces soldier. For Ralph’s $50,000 and Lisa’s bonds, he releases the badly hurt Richard to officers dressed as paramedics, Dodds among them. Sent out to check the getaway car, Roxie surrenders instead, and Joe lashes out at Benson.
Spoiler, the ending: Joe leaves the house with Benson and both children, his gun at her head. Benson talks him into letting Tess and Luca go, and as he forces her toward the car a police sniper shoots him dead. Benson asks for Noah, and Tucker promises to bring him to her and praises how she handled the ordeal.
Why it stands out
- Robert John Burke’s Ed Tucker, newly promoted to captain at IAB, steps in as the hostage negotiator.
- Critics praised the pacing and Mariska Hargitay’s performance, though some felt the hour fell short of Benson’s earlier hostage ordeals.
- The hostage taker’s name reportedly nods to baseball’s Chase Utley, whose slide broke the leg of Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada in the 2015 playoffs; executive producer Warren Leight is a Mets fan.
