Summary
“First Light” begins as Harris Vernon, a professor, and his wife, Katharine, find the word “whore” sprayed across their garage door. Each is then sent a thumb drive at work holding a video of Katharine in bed with a man she says she has never seen. Two months after the deli siege, Carisi is still shaken, reliving it while buying coffee, and Deonte Mosley has a new pro bono lawyer and now pleads not guilty. The Vernons, who sleep in separate rooms, bring the video to Benson. Shot from a roof across the street, it shows the man walking through their unlocked door and straight to Katharine’s bed. Benson asks about sleep medication, and Harris tells Fin he would have protected her had he been home.
A neighbor’s camera catches the vandal, Annette Gallagher of Elizabeth, New Jersey, whose husband, Tommy, is the man in the video. Annette hired a private investigator after finding Tommy’s messages with a woman from Roommate Syndrome, a forum for married couples who no longer have sex. Tommy tells Curry and Carisi that Katharine invited him, describing a Sleeping Beauty fantasy and promising an unlocked door. TARU traces the posts to the Vernons’ shared computer, sent on the weekdays Harris has no classes while Katharine is at her office. Katharine refuses to believe her husband set up the account and throws the detectives out, but an authorship specialist Rollins brings in matches the messages to Harris’s own fiction. Silva and Velasco find a young colleague, Derek Poole, who says Harris arranged for him to sleep with Katharine at a Boston conference while Harris watched. Harris and Tommy are arrested.
At trial a sleep specialist testifies that Katharine’s pills were tampered with to hold nearly twice the prescribed dose. Poole, spared his own charge in exchange for testifying, says Katharine was almost unresponsive. The defense questions Katharine about flirting and her marriage, and she answers that the degradation is her husband’s, not hers. Carisi then freezes, haunted by the deli, and rests his case. Katharine is furious, Baxter calls to ask whether Carisi wants off the case, and Benson tells him to wake up. Annette reveals that Harris drove to New Jersey before trial to meet Tommy and offered to pay off their mortgage if they stuck together. Carisi uses that to turn Tommy, who says Harris was in the room and drugged Katharine.
Spoiler, the ending: Faced with the bribe and Tommy’s account, Harris pleads guilty and takes 15 years; Tommy gets seven. Benson tells Katharine that her old life is gone and calls that a glorious thing. Carisi goes home to dinner with Rollins and the children, and they agree they will be all right.
