Summary
“Economics of Shame” opens as 1NYC reporter Kelsey Sommers, a year after her engagement fell apart, goes on a date with Tyler Camden, a charming man she met online, and spends the night with him at a hotel. The next day he sends her a nude photo, she sends one back, and he demands $50,000 or he will send her pictures to everyone she knows. Kelsey climbs onto a ledge, and Benson talks her down. Tyler then reveals he secretly recorded them having sex and gives her 48 hours. His number traces only to a second-number app, and the DNA and prints from the hotel match no one.
A Bronx contact tells the squad about similar cases, including a victim who killed herself. Another, 19-year-old Ruby Conzo, paid $50,000 from the settlement for her parents’ deaths after a man she met on a grief forum filmed them in bed; she left the cash in a rental car’s trunk. Kelsey agrees to a drop, and the man who collects the money is Neil Marsh, an unemployed copywriter who says he is a sextortion victim working off his own debt by finding wealthy targets online. He gives up a man named Constantine in Queens, and Carisi offers him a deal.
Through Neil, Velasco poses as Juan Pablo, a married venture capitalist from Mexico City. His date, Audra Miller, gets his number and then collects her pay from Constantine Koutris, who is arrested. Audra explains that she only gathers numbers so others can do the texting, and gives up a Queens house that turns out to belong to Constantine’s brother, Basil. Basil is caught on his way into JFK with $85,000 in cash strapped to him, but a scheduled email sends Kelsey’s video to her whole newsroom. Told that Basil was fleeing and had emptied his crypto accounts, Constantine dismisses the lawyer Basil hired and agrees to talk.
Spoiler, the ending: Judge Serani remands Basil on counts of unlawful surveillance, coercion and grand larceny, and a plea is expected. Neil thanks the detectives and says that after Kelsey interviewed him, he learned he could sue the firm that fired him. Kelsey, who keeps her job, presents an undercover report on sextortion, an approach Benson suggested. The ring turns out to have extorted hundreds of people, and Benson assures Ruby that her money will eventually be returned.
