Summary
“Thirsty” opens with the squad cheering Curry to a win in a boxing match. Afterward Chief Tynan tells Curry that her SVU post holds no real authority and hints at a way up. At a hotel convention for Romeo Martin, a 16-year-old ballet prodigy whose superfans are mostly women in their 40s and 50s, attendee Leyla Hartman tells Benson that Romeo raped her in his room after midnight. Benson locks down the hotel. In Romeo’s room detectives find his mother and manager, Diane Martin, dead of a head wound, and a path along the ledge to a locked room where Romeo is hiding. Diane had taken in about $600,000 in fan donations.
Romeo stays silent until Bruno, alone with him, reveals that a friend of his mother sexually assaulted him at 15. Romeo then says a drunk Leyla followed him into his room and sexually assaulted him, and when Diane walked in, Leyla struck her with a marble object; he fled through the window. Leyla turned down a forensic exam, and a search of her room turns up the murder weapon and a used condom hidden in a coffee cup in her minifridge. Diane had banned her from the fan group. With only Leyla’s prints on the weapon, Benson arrests her.
Leyla’s lawyer, Dan Olin, gets her released on bond and attacks SVU at a press conference while needling Carisi. Her estranged husband, Chris Gibson, will not testify against the mother of their children. Homicide detective John Whalen tells Benson of an old rumor that a cop’s partner covered up his off-duty shooting in 2001; Benson gathers that the officer was Jimmy Griffin, Griffin’s father, and that the partner is now Chief Tynan. At trial Olin grills Romeo about the money from fans until he breaks down. Leyla claims Romeo raped her and hit Diane with a book, and says detectives planted evidence, a judge was bribed and her husband is a criminal. Carisi has that testimony read to Gibson, who takes the stand and plays a voicemail in which Leyla threatened to accuse him falsely of rape and embezzlement.
Spoiler, the ending: The jury convicts Leyla of first-degree sexual assault and second-degree murder, and Bruno urges Romeo to see a therapist. Curry tells Benson she turned down Tynan’s offer of a deputy chief job and is being moved to executive officer of the 16th Precinct. She asks Benson not to fight it, but Benson is not so sure she will stay out of it.
Why it stands out
- Bruno reveals that he was sexually assaulted at 15 by a friend of his mother, sharing it to get Romeo to talk.
- Curry turns down a job offer from Chief Tynan and is reassigned out of SVU, as Benson hears a rumor tying Tynan to a 2001 shooting involving Griffin’s father.
- Glenn Fleshler returns as defense attorney Dan Olin, who also appears earlier in the season.
