Summary

“Feed the Craving” begins with Natalie Tanzillo, 34, apparently in labor for more than 48 hours with a stillborn baby she says was conceived in a rape, vanishing from a Chelsea sublet after telling her doula, Anika Bajaj, that her rapist was outside. Rollins, back at SVU as a sergeant, takes the case with Curry, whom Officer Eric Tran calls a rat from her IAB days. Anika warns that Natalie could bleed out without a doctor. Natalie then lets herself into her own apartment, alone, while Rollins and Curry are searching it, begs not to go to one particular hospital and is taken to another, where doctors find she was never pregnant. Benson suggests trauma can produce powerful ways of coping, but Natalie goes home.

The squad finds an ultrasound printout among her things and links her to a nonprofit, Wheels for Pups, where she volunteered. Her supervisor, Eduardo Perreira, tells Curry and Bruno that an old indecent exposure arrest came from a college dare. Then Lilly Braider, a doula who bought Natalie a baby gift eight months earlier, tells Benson and Rollins that Natalie is a predator: during a fake labor that went on for days, Natalie had Lilly rub her thighs and touched herself, saying it could start labor. Lilly contacts other doulas, and a roomful come forward; some were kept on FaceTime for days and saw the same behavior.

Carisi can charge a felony scheme to defraud for 30 doulas who worked for free, but warns that the sexual abuse counts will be hard to prove and that women make up only 2% of registered sex offenders. Benson invites Natalie to her office, plays the warm confidante and announces that Perreira will be arrested for her rape. When Natalie insists he did nothing, Benson confronts her with the conflicting dates she has given for her rape and arrests her. At trial the defense calls psychiatrist Dr. Damian Oshiro, who diagnoses factitious disorder, once known as Munchausen syndrome; Carisi gets him to agree that sexual gratification and avoiding charges count as outside rewards. On the stand, Natalie admits she liked how the doulas’ touch felt.

Spoiler, the ending: While the jury deliberates, defense attorney Andrea Vargas offers a guilty plea to every fraud count if the sexual abuse charges are dropped. Benson objects, but Carisi warns that the jury could acquit on everything and expects five years of probation, so a new offense would put Natalie back in custody. Natalie pleads guilty to scheme to defraud and tells Benson she is an amazing officer; Benson answers that she will see her soon.
