Summary

In “Arcana,” clairvoyant Beatrice Witt calls 911 to report that a man got into her bedroom at 4:30 a.m., covered her head and tried to rape her until she pushed him off. She waited until after a 9:30 client to call, and had a locksmith fix the broken window. A doorbell camera shows no one leaving, and the house seems empty until Griffin and a colleague stumble on her mother, Sarah, who has Alzheimer’s disease and is kept locked in her room.

Fired attendant Stephen Dowd suggests Beatrice herself took Sarah’s missing jewelry to cover bills, says drawers opened on their own in the house, and has an alibi in his overnight client, Miles Cohen. Emma’s father, tracked down over unpaid child support, was at a drugstore. Bonnie Mark, who works as Madam Zorrill and once filed a complaint against Beatrice, now believes in her, and reveals that Sarah shot Beatrice’s father, Gerald, years earlier. Old reports say Gerald was a violent drunk and that Sarah fired in self-defense; no case was brought.

Beatrice refuses to let the detectives question her seven-year-old daughter, Emma. Sarah takes Griffin for Gerald and screams at him. Curry, recalling a psychic her mother-in-law took her to after her husband died, accuses Beatrice of cold reading; Beatrice says she only voices what she feels. Emma says she once saw “Grandpa” at night, long-haired and bearded, though Gerald was clean-shaven, and the old forensics suggest Sarah did not fire the shot.

After Beatrice sees a man’s shadow in the house again, Benson tells her she wrote herself lunchbox notes signed from her mother as a girl, so no one would know her mother was drunk. Beatrice says her father came to her room at night, that her mother took beatings and rapes in her place, and that she shot him herself as he beat Sarah with a fire poker; Sarah wiped the gun and took the blame. Detectives hear noises above, find a false wall in the attic and signs that someone has lived there for about three months with Sarah’s jewelry and photos of Beatrice. One photo was taken by her high school boyfriend, Chris Garibaldi, released from Bellevue three months earlier. Rollins spots a man on the fire escape, and Garibaldi is arrested, pleading with Beatrice to help him.

The ending

Spoiler: Curry tells Beatrice that Garibaldi will be arraigned and assessed for fitness to stand trial, and will stay in a hospital even if found unfit. Beatrice apologizes for the psychic who misled Curry, and Curry says she and her husband had separated before he died without telling anyone. No action over Gerald Witt’s death is mentioned.

Case outcome: Chris Garibaldi, no verdict or plea. Conviction rates
