Summary
“911” begins as an emergency operator takes a call from a nine-year-old girl, Maria, who says she is locked in a room and has not eaten in two days. Benson, about to leave for the evening, takes over the call and keeps her talking while the squad works the trace. The phone belongs to cab driver Ricardo Garcia and places the call near a Spanish Harlem housing project, where Munch leads a door-to-door search. Fin finds Garcia, who lost his phone, and his own daughter is safe at home: the number has been cloned. Maria describes a windowless room with a bed and a garden picture, and a man named Richard whom she calls her dad.
A crumpled note from Richard’s jacket naming Felipe’s Burgers seems promising until the restaurant turns out to have burned down months earlier. When Benson presses her, Maria says Richard warned that police would not believe her, and she hangs up. She calls back from what the trace now shows is the Holland Tunnel, and Cragen has the tunnel closed and traffic searched. Dialect expert Julia Ortiz identifies Honduran slang, and Maria gives an address in Tegucigalpa. She says she crossed the border, that her parents sold her to Richard, and that he abuses her and lets friends abuse her while he takes pictures. Novak seeks help from Honduran consul Duarte Farias. A new call places Maria in Queens, and Munch suggests the whole thing is a hoax using a voice changer and recorded traffic noise.
Honduran police reach Maria’s mother, Beatrice, who believes Maria died crossing the desert; Maria says her cousin handed her to a stranger. FBI agent Rachel Sorannis concludes that a virus in the cell company’s switches is sending the calls to random towers. A photo from Honduras lets Benson match Maria to pictures that Montreal police had circulated of an unidentified girl in child pornography, and Maria describes Richard’s brown hair and silver glasses. As her battery dies, Maria grows weak and stops answering. Sorannis removes the virus, but when the line opens again, a man is on it.
Spoiler, the ending: Munch spots a Felipe’s cup in photos of the room, and the search turns to an electronics store across from the burned-out restaurant. There Benson and Fin stop Richard Dwyer, who says the store belongs to his father. In its basement they find the garden picture and fresh signs of cleaning, but no Maria. Mud on Dwyer’s shoes sends them to the empty lot, where they dig her out of the ground. She is not breathing, but Benson revives her, and Maria whispers “Olivia.”
