Summary

The Investigation

“Seer” opens with a murder: a young woman in stiletto heels is found by a dumpster after a night of rain, killed by a blow to the left side of the head. Shoe prints in a patch of motor oil lead to the body and away again, and Beck recovers names from her soaked address book; one contact identifies her as Rachel Cardwell, a designer at Dreisner Design. At her apartment, neighbor Tim Grayson turns up, says he saw her leave for a party around 9:00, and insists they were only friends. The autopsy finds bruising consistent with an attempted sexual assault.

A phone message from her friend Leanne Parks leads to Tart, a roving sex party for women held that night on Broome Street, two blocks from the scene. Parks says Rachel was dancing with a tall man with curly dark hair when Parks left with a man named Mark. The doorwoman recalls a man who claimed Rachel had invited him and left a lawyer’s misprinted business card, which leads to the law firm where Grayson works and keeps photos of Rachel on his office wall.

Grayson admits being turned away at the club and says he saw Rachel dead in an alley in a vision. Walking Green through the scene, he describes the attack and shows where the killer took and replaced a metal bar. His oil-stained shoes match the prints, and he is arrested.

The Trial

Defense attorney Virginia Masters gets all evidence except the shoe prints suppressed, arguing that Grayson was effectively in custody for hours without Miranda warnings. She drops a planned insanity defense after Skoda finds Grayson sane and racked with guilt. At trial, a paid psychic, David Harrison, describes his career until McCoy points to his corporate clients’ losses. Grayson says a vision sent him to the alley after 1 a.m., where he found Rachel dead, but under McCoy’s cross he shouts that he killed her, then retracts it on redirect. Called by the defense, Skoda concedes Grayson is not easily manipulated.

The prosecutors recheck Parks’s story. Her doorman says she never brings men home, Parks admits there was no Mark, and the wool glove found at the scene is a women’s size eight. In a ruse arranged with McCoy, Masters tells Grayson that a witness has named him and that she must withdraw as his lawyer. Grayson then breaks down and describes watching Parks kiss Rachel and strike her with the bar when Rachel tried to pull away.

Spoiler, the ending: Parks confesses once she is arrested. Her lawyer seeks a deal, and McCoy accepts it, with Grayson as the main witness against her; the terms of the plea are not given.
