Summary

The Investigation

“Fate’s Cruel Joke” opens with a dog leading its owner to a suitcase in the storage basement of a luxury tower whose condos sit mostly empty, bought by overseas investors. Inside is a young woman whose neck was broken months earlier. A faded tattoo reading MCF identifies her through closed missing-person reports as Lucia Falasco, a former gymnastics star from Queens, 17 when she died; the letters are her late mother’s initials. Her coach and guardian, Craig Valparaiso, reported her missing twice before but not this time, and says a shoulder injury ended her career and sent her off the rails.

Her friend Julissa Newcastle says Lucia left to stay with a man she met at a skate park. Skaters describe a boyfriend in sparkly sneakers, who runs when the detectives approach. Walker chases on foot, and Riley’s car strikes Derek Crosby, a utility worker in ear protection on a closed street. At the hospital, Brady is told the siren was on and the suspect may have had a gun, says protocol was followed and sends Riley home. Riley’s daughter, Bridget, suggests searching skate-park location tags, which leads to Benjamin Hoffman, 18, an influencer with more than 8 million followers, whose fingerprint matches one on the suitcase. He once owned a condo in the building.

The Trial

Hoffman, represented by Cordelia Travers, is charged with second-degree murder. Price wins the right to call his ex-girlfriend, Mandy Waller, who says he choked her at 16, though Travers suggests she started the fight. Hoffman’s assistant, Cory Mason, testifies that Lucia’s phone went silent the night he left the two alone and that Hoffman sent him to buy a suitcase the next day.

Travers offers a proffer. Hoffman says they were using cocaine Mason delivered when Lucia attempted a backflip on his trampoline, hit the edge and landed on her head, and he hid her body in a panic. The prosecutors reject a plea to concealing a corpse. Riley fails to appear to testify; Crosby has been declared brain dead and taken off life support. Riley turns up at the DA’s office, deflects a question about whether he has been drinking, and admits he knew Hoffman was unarmed and lied to justify the crash before he is told to stop talking.

Spoiler, the ending: Mason confirms the drug delivery, and Hoffman pleads guilty to concealing a human corpse and reckless endangerment, facing six to eight years. The prosecution says it reversed course because a jury might have believed him. The episode ends at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where a speaker describes relapsing after nearly a year sober.
