Summary
The Investigation
“Beyond Measure” begins on Ash Wednesday, when gunfire breaks out at the Atlas Museum of Art. Two men posing as guards have cleared a gallery and taken the Crown of Popayán, a gold crown set with 450 emeralds, on loan from the Vatican. Longtime guard Cecil Carbo, who tried to stop them, dies of his wounds. One thief is shot dead after drawing on a patrol officer; the other escapes on a bike. Archbishop Keane brings Carbo’s wife, Valentina, and daughter, Luna, to the scene, and he is allowed to pray over the body. The museum’s cameras were down for a 12-minute reboot, and the dead man carried a genuine staff ID under a false name.
Activist Amaru Yupanqui, who says the crown belongs to Indigenous Colombians and emailed the museum a threat, proves he was at mass. The dead thief’s tattoo points to a special operations unit, and Pentagon DNA records identify him as Frank Stephens, a dishonorably discharged veteran. His girlfriend, Amy Campbell, leads detectives to museum guard Joe Whitaker, who used a colleague’s login to order the reboot and twice reported his ID lost. Under a proffer deal, Whitaker names the second thief only as Flaco, who served with Stephens in Afghanistan, and says the pair used pagers. Their Morse code messages point to a Miami flight, and detectives arrest Luis Salazar at the gate, finding a pager in his checked bag; he was connecting to Yemen. The crown is missing.
The Trial
Judge Evelyn Boyd suppresses the pager, ruling that the bag was already in the airline’s custody, and rejects an inevitable-discovery argument. Whitaker identifies Salazar, but defense attorney Max Wood notes that Whitaker described Flaco as his own height, about 5’7”, while Salazar is 6’1”, and that the thieves wore masks. A visitor on crutches whom Whitaker recalls tells prosecutors he heard one thief say “Leonard” had better deliver. Leonard Hawkins, Salazar’s former uncle by marriage, testifies that Salazar asked him to move a gold-and-emerald piece and later said he had done the job.
Wood then visits Baxter with Archbishop Keane, offering the crown’s return in exchange for a plea. Alone with Baxter, Keane argues that the relic matters to millions of believers, many of them Baxter’s constituents. Price calls the offer desperation in a case nearly won and accuses Baxter of chasing Catholic votes, but Baxter orders the deal.
Spoiler, the ending: Salazar pleads guilty and is sentenced to 15 years, and the crown is returned. At a ceremony, Keane thanks Baxter without mentioning Carbo. Carbo’s family objects that they were promised justice and that Salazar will be free before he turns 40, and they are told that prosecutors must also weigh the public interest.
Why it stands out
- Baxter overrules Price and trades a reduced plea for the stolen crown after a personal appeal from Archbishop Keane, played by Michael O’Keefe.
- Diane Ciesla returns as Judge Evelyn Boyd, who has presided over earlier revival cases; here her ruling throws out the pager evidence.
- The thieves coordinate the heist with rented pagers and Morse code, which the detectives decode with a phone app.
