Summary
The Case
“Lost Girls” sets its case in motion when Tate, on a trip with Kayce to sell Monica’s stallion in Wyoming, spots Hayley Charlo, a classmate from Broken Rock, at a truck stop; she says she is traveling with her boyfriend and hurries off. Miles knows Hayley has been missing for about four months, and the team suspects she is being trafficked. Cal assigns the unit to guard Sammy LaChance, a suspect in several killings who is testifying in a federal bid-rigging case, but lets Kayce and Miles tell Hayley’s mother, Ellie Charlo. Rainwater warns Kayce against raising false hopes, then swallows his pride and asks Cal to lead the search.
Andrea finds that both Hayley and another missing girl, Ava, talked online with an account using the name Noah, and Kayce and Miles find him fishing at Greely Creek. They beat him until he admits using photos and videos to blackmail girls into sex work and gives up his buyer, Kurt Bludsoe. Noah is then handed to people from the reservation and shut in a trunk. Belle and Andrea feed LaChance’s Witness Security agent a list of his contacts in Hawaii and California, so he is sent somewhere cold instead. Gifford approves the marshals assisting the Broken Rock tribal police.
Bludsoe uses an alias card at a Three Forks truck stop, where Kayce finds Hayley. She refuses to leave because the other girls would pay for it, and she says Bludsoe killed Ava as a warning. Her clue about a place with trees points Andrea to the logo of Ponderosa Truck Stops, and road cameras pick up Bludsoe’s camper near Toston.
The Team
Tate hurts his arm while trying to get close to Monica’s stallion, and Kayce decides the horse has to go; the Wyoming sale falls through when the horse bites the buyer. Cal has lunch with Maddie, who turns down his offer to help with her car. Ava’s mother, who now runs an advocacy group called North Star, says Monica had been committed to the cause. At home, Tate tells his father that bringing Hayley back would be the best way to honor Monica.
Spoiler, the ending: The team chases the camper toward Norris, and a gunman fires from it. One marshal vehicle draws the gunfire so another can get ahead. The marshals stop the camper and move to secure the girls, but Kayce radios that they have missed them, and the episode ends there with Hayley and the other girls still missing.
Why it stands out
- Isabel DeRoy-Olson first appears as Hayley Charlo, a role she plays again in the next episode.
