Summary

The Case

“All Hat No Cattle” picks up the day after the attack on East Camp, with Tate away on a fishing trip with Tom Weaver. A lawyer, Stan Cobb, arrives at the ranch with armed men, says Weaver is raising his offer for East Camp and hints that Tate could have a fishing accident. Kayce agrees to sign, then kills Cobb and both gunmen. He accuses Dolly of being planted by her father, learns from her that Weaver’s stronghold is a ranch in Wyoming, and phones Weaver, offering East Camp and Dolly for Tate without telling the marshals; Weaver summons him to Big Horn.

Cal and Belle, after finding Kayce’s ranch hand dead, survive an ambush and stop a truck of gunmen carrying the same phones as the East Camp attackers. The team identifies Jeb Burroughs, a discharged Canadian special forces veteran, as a likely leader and learns he is foreman on Weaver’s ranch. Rainwater’s testimony was meant to move the mine, and the alternative site is Weaver’s land. Records show Weaver raised more than $200 million this year for a cattle venture and is barred from selling securities in Wyoming; the team concludes he is running a Ponzi scheme built on cattle that do not exist. Andrea, uneasy after Kayce brushes her off on her way to the airport, traces Weaver’s jet to Big Horn.

On the way in a sheriff takes Kayce’s rifle, and Kayce hands Dolly a hidden gun. Kayce signs, and Weaver lays out a story in which Tate dies in an accident and Kayce is shot seeking revenge. Weaver’s gun proves empty, and Kayce breaks away as gunfire erupts. At the river he kills Jeb with a rock and reaches Tate, and the marshals arrive by helicopter and arrest Weaver’s men. Weaver flees by car with Dolly; cornered, he refuses to give up and the car rolls down a hill. He survives, but Dolly dies at the scene. He invites Kayce to take revenge, and Kayce leaves him to live with her death.

The Team

Miles returns from Washington to desk duty with word that the mine is being moved. At the bar, the team hears that Weaver claims Dolly knew nothing about where the money went and that the barn fire was set by his ranch hands. Belle tells Cal she is coming to his oncologist appointment in Salt Lake City that week. Andrea says she would be crazy to leave the team.

Spoiler, the ending: Back at East Camp, Tate tells Kayce that he came for him as he always does. Kayce sends him up to bed and insists on cleaning up the wrecked house alone, and Tate reminds him that he turns 18 in a couple of months.
