Summary
“Funny Valentine” opens at a recording session where 19-year-old singer Micha Green, discovered at age nine by producer John “Brass” Blanken, is beaten and choked by her boyfriend, hip-hop star Caleb Bryant, after he flies into a jealous rage in front of his entourage. Micha names him, and detectives arrest Caleb at a nightclub. His lawyer, Ben Cohen, warns the squad against rushing to bring down a famous Black performer. Sound engineer Ferrari reluctantly admits seeing punches and a brief choke; others who were in the room say they saw nothing.
Barba charges Caleb with assault, strangulation and attempted sexual abuse. Bail is $500,000 and Caleb must stay 1,000 yards from Micha. A photo of her battered face spreads online, and Mr. Price, who manages her business, frets about her endorsements. Micha soon refuses to testify, and Ferrari books a job in Buenos Aires. Barba offers Caleb a plea to assault with a suspended sentence and suggests he apologize publicly; Caleb instead apologizes on Wendy Williams’s talk show, cancels his tour and sends Micha a ring. Detectives then find him in Micha’s hotel room, but she says she invited him, and Judge Ortiz gives him a suspended 30 days. When Amaro frisks Caleb and finds only a little marijuana, Caleb files a complaint against him. Fin asks Brass to watch her at the launch party for her new duet with Caleb.
At the party Brass phones Fin to say Caleb has slipped in the back door. Minutes later shots are fired: Brass dies of a chest wound, Micha is found unconscious beside him, and everyone left in the club claims to have seen nothing. Micha blames the detectives for setting Brass against Caleb, and Caleb says he was home channel surfing. After meeting Brass’s widow and young son and watching the childhood video that brought her to Brass, Micha tells Benson and Barba that Caleb has beaten her before and that he shot Brass when Brass ordered him to stay away from her.
Spoiler, the ending: That night Caleb calls her for an hour on a disposable phone. Before the grand jury Micha says Caleb was never at the party, blames a concussion for her earlier account and accuses Barba and the detective of pressuring her. She leaves by private jet for Bermuda with Caleb, and on their yacht he turns on her when she asks about a text on his phone. News reports later say Micha’s body has been found floating beside the chartered yacht, that the cause of death is not yet known and that the couple was heard arguing. No charge against Caleb follows on screen.
Why it stands out
- Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro plays Ferrari, a sound engineer in Caleb’s circle who sees the beating but will not testify.
- Jeffrey Tambor plays Caleb’s confident lawyer, Ben Cohen, a role he takes up again later in the season in “Traumatic Wound.”
- Talk-show host Wendy Williams appears as herself, interviewing first Caleb and then Micha.
