Summary
“Mirror Effect” finds Rollins, still recovering from her shooting, warned by a department therapist that more missed sessions could cost her active duty. That night pop stars Kelsey Jones and Austin Boyer, a couple with 30 million followers on their joint account, leave a red-carpet event, and in their limo Austin drags Kelsey onto his lap and tears her dress. Rollins sees the scuffle in the street and offers Kelsey a ride. The next day Kelsey tells Benson that at home Austin tried to have sex after she said no, then threw her onto the bed in a rage before passing out. Their driver will not get involved, Austin claims she threw a champagne bottle at him, and Carisi warns that a celebrity case like this will be hard to win. Then Austin proposes, and Kelsey, whose songs are all about him, drops the complaint.
Kelsey’s mother, Lilah, flies in. Austin visits Benson to say he has gone to his first sobriety meeting, and she advises him to do the opposite of whatever he was taught about being a man. After a dinner where Lilah insults Austin and the couple fight, Kelsey says Austin raped her when they got home; Austin admits to rough sex but calls fighting their foreplay. He is charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sexual assault and third-degree rape and released on $100,000 bail after giving up his passport. Earlier, at home, Rollins draws her gun on an imagined monster in her daughters’ closet, frightening the girls.
At trial, Austin’s lawyer, Elaine Samuels, confronts Lilah with a 2015 police report from Maysville, Kentucky, in which Kelsey, then 17, accused her mother’s boyfriend of molesting her; Lilah says she never believed it. Austin’s fans heckle Kelsey, and Judge Felicia Catano denies a defense request for a mistrial but bars disruptive spectators. Under Carisi’s cross-examination about his abusive, alcoholic father, Austin insists he is nothing like him, then turns to Kelsey and admits that he was controlling and attacked her.
Spoiler, the ending: The jury acquits Austin of first-degree rape and sexual assault but convicts him of third-degree rape, a felony that also puts him on the sex offender registry. His lawyer plans an appeal, though Austin says he would rather serve his time and move on. Kelsey wonders how she can sing songs about their love, and is told that what they had was not love. Rollins admits she pulled her gun in her daughters’ room, and later tells Carisi she fears she has already damaged her relationship with him; she resolves to get rid of her own monster.
Why it stands out
- Rollins’s post-traumatic stress after her shooting runs through the episode; Kelli Giddish had confirmed in August 2022 that she would leave the series midway through the season.
- Julia Goldani Telles and Grant Anstine play the pop couple, with Dana Wheeler-Nicholson as Kelsey’s mother, Lilah.
