Summary
“No Surrender” opens at a ceremony where Army Capt. Beth Williams, a Silver Star recipient and the first woman to finish Ranger school, is told she will be the face of a three-month recruiting tour. After a party at the apartment her fiancé, Mickey Reid, shares with his friend George, a jogger finds her near 207th Street, beaten and bleeding from a head wound, her skirt torn. Fin, once a Ranger himself, calls Benson in. CSU finds $5,000 in cash in Beth’s backpack, and at the hospital Beth says she remembers little and worries mostly that the attack will wreck the tour. Her superior officer, Maj. Robert Dantley, asks Benson to keep the case out of the press.
Blood on Beth’s legs belongs to Jose Marquez, who shows a video of an underground fight club where Beth beat him that night for a $5,000 purse; a walk-in clinic gives him an alibi. Beth admits she fought to pay for an experimental Parkinson’s drug for her mother, Sylvia. An online troll calling himself Superman78, Gary Cook, a dishonorably discharged veteran who had posted threats against her, was outside the fight. He resists arrest, and Beth picks him out as her attacker. But Cook signed in at his grandmother’s assisted-living home in Yonkers at 4:50 a.m., and street video shows him shaking Beth’s hand and walking away. Pressed, Beth allows she may have been wrong, and Dantley says the Army is calling her back to base.
Bar receipts put Mickey a block from the scene at 4:25 a.m. George admits their video-game alibi was false: Beth had broken off the engagement after the party, and Mickey left about 20 minutes after her. TARU tracks Mickey’s phone to Beth’s mother’s house, where Benson and Fin find Beth in the basement beating him and talk her into stepping back. Beth says she worked out that it was Mickey and wanted to make him suffer, and describes him drunk and angry, hitting her as she turned to leave. She is warned that she has wrecked her credibility as a witness and committed a crime herself, but is offered help with the DA if she cooperates.
Spoiler, the ending: Beth stays away from Mickey’s arraignment, where he pleads not guilty and the judge refuses the prosecution’s request to hold him. Benson tracks her down and urges her to testify, telling her an assault changes a survivor without making her any less. After Mickey is indicted for rape, Beth holds a news conference, gives her own name instead of Jane Doe and says she is not ashamed and wants other survivors to come forward.
Why it stands out
- The series’ 401st episode, airing one week after the 400th, “Great Expectations.”
- The case draws on Fin’s past as an Army Ranger, since the victim is a fellow Ranger.
