Summary
“Redemption in Her Corner” opens on Benson’s birthday with a video call from Rafael Barba, now in Iowa looking into election fraud. Kat is training at Romeo Solís’s gym for a qualifying bout against his star, Esperanza Morales, 19. Before the fight Kat finds Romeo’s office locked; Cami, a 16-year-old boxer, rushes out, and Romeo says he was putting her shoulder back in place. He then tips Kat off to Esperanza’s weak left hook and tells her to follow with her overhand right. Kat loses, and Esperanza later lets slip that Romeo warned her about that right hand, which Kat takes as a message to keep quiet.
Cami denies anything happened, but her grandmother describes Romeo driving her home late after training, which Kat calls grooming, though Benson urges caution. Pushed by Esperanza, Cami comes in and says she and Romeo are in love; Esperanza says he has been having sex with her for two years, starting when she was 14, and Cami’s texts confirm it. Before the squad can question him, Esperanza confronts Romeo at the gym and knocks him out, and he hits his head. She insists he never touched her. Her father, Santos, urges her to get a lawyer, and Benson scolds Kat for interrupting the interview with his message. Romeo pleads not guilty to second-degree rape at a hospital bedside arraignment and is held on $20,000 bail, but minutes later he dies of a brain bleed.
Bureau Chief Vanessa Hadid has Carisi charge Esperanza with second-degree manslaughter, which carries up to 15 years. Val Nuñez, a trainer, heard Romeo call Esperanza damaged goods just before she hit him. Kat visits Esperanza at Rikers without her lawyer and mentions Santos, and Esperanza walks out; Carisi warns Kat she could have wrecked the case, and Benson tells her she can’t trust her right now. Santos tells detectives his other daughter, Graciela, became an addict. With her lawyer present, Esperanza finally says Santos raped her when she was a child, that Romeo knew, and that Romeo mocked her about it during the argument. Graciela, now clean, confirms the abuse but wants money to testify, and Kat pays her.
Spoiler, the ending: Santos visits Esperanza at Rikers, and in a recorded confrontation he admits abusing her and blames his own needs. Carisi gives Esperanza a plea to second-degree assault with two years. Santos is arrested in front of Graciela, who says she hopes he dies in prison, offers to give Kat back her money and visits her sister in jail, where they embrace.
Why it stands out
- Raúl Esparza appears as Rafael Barba, the squad’s former ADA, in a video call with Benson from Iowa.
- The case centers on Kat Tamin, who joined the squad earlier in the season as a detective-in-training and here steps over the line repeatedly.
