Season 1 recap

The Canadian Criminal Intent is set in the Toronto Police Service’s Major Crime Unit, and its ten-episode first season aired on Citytv from February to May 2024. DS Henry Graff (Aden Young) and DS Frankie Bateman (Kathleen Munroe) take the cases for Insp. Vivienne Holness (Karen Robinson), Deputy Crown Attorney Theo Forrester (K.C. Collins) tests their evidence, and pathologist Dr. Lucy Da Silva (Nicola Correia-Damude) and Mark Yohannes (Araya Mengesha), who pulls evidence off devices and video, round out the team. In “The Key to the Castle” a crypto founder vanishes from his own boat party with about $300 million, and his partner, a con man, gives himself away when told the victim survived.

A magazine journalist chasing a story about the mayor is killed at Union Station in “Crack Reporter” as a video of him smoking crack surfaces mid-campaign; her killer, a councillor’s apparently dying husband, agrees to say he acted alone if it stays quiet until the vote. A shooting of four condo board members in “Good Neighbours” uncovers a girl buried in concrete on the roof since 2003, and an old X-ray clears the dead man and points to his brother, who also admits the shooting. In “Boys Will Be Boys” a junior hockey captain is beaten to death by a teammate’s billet mother after the coach secretly staged a hazing to keep his stars out of Game 7.

Money and fame drive others. A staged suicide in “Minnow and the Shark” exposes a $40 million bread price-fixing deal, and both company heads are arrested. “The Sound of Silence” ties a strangled former radio staffer to a star host who abused women and the staff who covered for him, and in “Three Points” glitter links three killings to a limo driver who kills people who turn him away. Emmanuel Kabongo plays Det. Langston James of Guns and Gangs in the romance-scam case “Bleeding Hearts.”

The finale, “Cul-De-Sac,” turns on defence lawyer Willa Fenwick, shot in an alley. Her neighbour Susan Wright is really Ruth Keller, who helped a boyfriend kill his mother in the 1990s, took a plea deal likened to the Homolka case and vanished in 2013 with a new face and name. Willa found out, and Ruth’s daughter, Penny, shot her with her father’s pistol to keep the secret. Penny breaks after a detective confides having a father once suspected of something terrible.
