Summary
The Case
“Crack Reporter” follows Toronto Life investigative journalist Tatiana Wynn as she slips away from her colleague and roommate, Sarah Blayne, to meet a source; on a crowded Union Station walkway, a man cuts her throat and takes her bag. Graff and Bateman see a planned hit, not another of the month’s random transit stabbings. Her boss, Mr. Sanjar, who spent the night with her, knows only that the story was big. Sarah recalls an anonymous package and a video Tatiana watched all night, and Tatiana’s encrypted drive holds a folder labelled only “Mayor.”
Mayor Craig McCreigh, facing councillors John Graham and Liz Harding in the election, waves off the detectives until a video of him smoking crack is posted from Tatiana’s account. He admits the relapse was two weeks ago, outside a bar he visits on Tuesdays, but denies the murder, and the detectives are warned to bring solid evidence before going near him again. The original file on Tatiana’s drive runs 11 seconds longer than the posted clip, and the cut part shows a Carbone Properties truck. Contractor Aldo Carbone, whose stalled project suddenly won its permits, is found dead in a pit at his site.
Graham admits fixing the permit for a contractor sent to him through Harding’s office. Harding says her husband, retired colonel Todd Harding, introduced her to Aldo. Anti-nausea pills, a signed football and Todd’s nickname, Foxy, tie him to the friendly regular the detectives met at Aldo’s pub. The detectives conclude Todd set up the video to sink McCreigh, killed Tatiana when her reporting turned to him and then killed Aldo. Forrester doubts it supports even a fraud charge, and the detectives are told only a confession will do.
The Interrogation
At the televised debate, Liz quietly tells Todd she will drop out so they can travel, and he talks her into finishing what they started. Graff then finds Todd, recounts the 2006 Afghanistan ambush that won him the Star of Military Valour and tells him he has perhaps three months to live. He warns that Bateman will bring Liz in for questioning, a headline that would end her campaign, and offers a deal instead: a statement that Todd acted alone, kept quiet until after the vote. Todd agrees and asks to be taken out the back so as not to spoil her night.
The ending
Spoiler: Liz closes the debate promising to serve Toronto. The detectives doubt the story can be kept quiet until the vote, and the episode ends with plans to buy, at the Four Seasons, the drink Tatiana never got.
Suspect’s fate: Colonel Todd Harding, arrested.
Why it stands out
- Dr. Lucy Da Silva does not appear; this is the first episode without a credit for Nicola Correia-Damude.
- The case is set among real Toronto institutions: Tatiana writes for Toronto Life, she is killed at Union Station, and Graham is needled over sending his sons to Upper Canada College.
