Summary
The Case
“Family Meal” follows Eli Parker, a McQueen management consultant sent from Vancouver, as he judges people by their numbers, grilling a sales manager, Wyatt Turner, at the e-commerce firm Solara. That night at Isadora, a restaurant with one Borealis guide star, his dinner guest overturns their table, and Eli asks chef Tayiah Sinclair for a kitchen tour. The next morning he is found dead in his short-term rental, struck with a bookend and smothered with a pillow; the break-in was staged.
Wine importer Quinn Hartnet, who phoned Eli five times that evening, says they slept together a few times before he stopped answering. Solara executive Price Chambers admits Eli was hired to cut staff, and Eli’s files point to a $6 million block of redundant managers he called the Kiwi Wing. A pineapple keepsake in Eli’s pocket lets Holness, a fine-dining fan, place him at Isadora, where Tayiah’s brother and manager, Jonah, identifies the table-flipper as Price, who was on that list; a bar puts Price there until closing.
Footage shows Eli dining alone night after night and testing staff the way Borealis inspectors do. Borealis says he was never one: claiming to work for a food group, he paid to meet an inspector, Quinn. The numbers 55, 92 and 136 in his unfinished blog post about Anaxagoras are her prices, in thousands, for one, two and three stars. Quinn admits selling ratings and says Tayiah had texted her in a panic, but footage keeps Quinn at another restaurant until 2 a.m.
The Interrogation
Tayiah, who survived an overdose and became a public face of sobriety in Toronto kitchens, says Eli warned her he would expose the inspector who sold Isadora its star, which she denies buying. Her alibi, an overnight lobster stock, collapses when the next day’s menu drops the lobster dish, and she admits she relapsed that night, using cocaine with a friend and wandering until dawn. Her mother’s will left $80,000 to her and Jonah, with Jonah controlling it because she was then in rehab, and he withdrew $55,000, the price of one star, just under a year ago.
The detectives return during the staff’s pre-shift family meal. Confronted, Jonah admits buying the star to keep the restaurant, and his sister, afloat, and Tayiah tells him about her relapse. Jonah then breaks down and confesses that he went to reason with Eli, that they fought, and that he only wanted Eli to stop screaming; he calls it an accident. Tayiah blames herself as he is taken away.
The ending
Spoiler: Afterward the detectives reflect on the saying that people are only as sick as the secrets they keep.
Suspect’s fate: Jonah, arrested.
