Biography
Inspector Vivienne Holness runs Toronto’s Major Crime Unit, handing its high-profile cases to detective sergeants Henry Graff and Frankie Bateman from the opening episode, “The Key to the Castle,” which first aired in 2024. In “Bleeding Hearts” she warns Graff that if he pulls his friend Langston James off a Guns and Gangs investigation again, it will be a problem for both men.
Her own past returns in “Hoggs Hollow.” Celine Windt is killed in a house where, ten years before, the owner’s first wife drowned in the pool, a case Holness worked as a junior investigator under Superintendent Charles Bishop; she credits him with teaching her half of what she knows. When it emerges that Bishop changed the wording of his notes on a later death in the same house, she confronts him alone, and he reports the mistake himself to professional standards and requests a complete review. Away from the office she is a keen fine diner, and in “Family Meal” her habit of following a starred restaurant’s daily menus lets her place a murdered consultant there from a pineapple keepsake in his pocket.
In “XOXO” she removes Graff from the inquiry into a minister’s death once his questioning of his own father turns personal, then lets him back on at Bateman’s urging. With Graff gone by “Diplomatico,” Guns and Gangs detective John Darcy is lent to the unit as Bateman’s partner, and as of “The Scorpion and the Tortoise” Holness is still in charge of the squad.
