Biography
Detective Sergeant Frankie Bateman investigates the Major Crime Unit’s headline cases under Inspector Vivienne Holness, partnered with Henry Graff from the series premiere, “The Key to the Castle,” first aired in 2024. On that first case she mentions that she got pregnant on a second date and is bringing up the child. In “Boys Will Be Boys,” a junior hockey killing, she confronts a billet mother over the hazing her own son once endured, shut in a freezer by teammates, and over her advice that he play on; afterward she is sent home to her daughter.
The work brings risk and the odd disguise. A high, hostile suspect shoves her in “Three Points,” and in “The Winning Bid” she poses as a homebuyer with cash income so that a realtor will refer her to a man who falsifies clients’ financial records. When Holness takes Graff off the case in “XOXO” because the dead minister was seeing his father, Bateman goes through the Paris file on his mother’s death with him until he accepts it was suicide, then talks Holness into reinstating him. She takes the minister’s teenage son into custody, and the partners finally get the root beer floats they set out for that morning.
Graff has left by “Diplomatico,” and Bateman has worked through four partners since. John Darcy of Guns and Gangs, whose cover at a mob boss’s table is blown when the boss is shot beside him, is lent to the unit for that case alone, and when the killer holds Bateman at gunpoint, Darcy talks him into letting her go. The arrangement lasts: as of “The Scorpion and the Tortoise” she calls Darcy her partner, and her father, consulted as a professional on a suspect’s abusive childhood, invites her and her daughter, Rowan, to Sunday dinner.
