Summary
The Case
“Three Points” opens with influencer Tara Franklin posting video of her bachelorette party from a limo and then fighting with her fiancé, Cole Miller, when she gets home. Elsewhere, personal support worker Ivy spots new bruises on elderly Verena Follows, and producer and former rapper Kevin “Bronson” Jones is left alone at home when his wife goes to her sister’s. After his security camera cuts out, Bronson is beaten to death. The autopsy finds cigarette burns in his ears made after death, along with dog hair and specks of glitter.
His widow admits they were divorcing, and his office is full of rejected submissions. The detectives connect his case to Tara’s strangling the week before, when her ring finger was cut off and her engagement ring went missing, reasoning that both victims were “gatekeepers” who turned someone away. Detective Will Hastings hands over his file: Tara also had glitter on her, and her limo driver, Calvin Follows, says she would not get out when she saw Cole in the window. Cole, high and hostile, shoves Bateman and is arrested, but his pampered profile does not fit the killer. Then bank teller Alisha Marriott, who locked her branch a minute early on a customer, is found stabbed with a $20 bill in her mouth and the same glitter on her body.
Using a word-association board, the detectives see that the glitter, the ring, the limo and the hip-hop all point to Calvin, whose passengers had mocked the rap songs he played. At home, Calvin threatens and frightens his mother. Forrester first refuses a warrant, then gets one when Calvin’s handwriting turns up on a demo letter Bronson rejected and Ivy confirms he was out on all three nights. The search finds glitter spread across his room, his limo already crushed, and signs that he is taking Verena to Thailand that night.
The Interrogation
With four hours before the flight, the team learns that Calvin’s father sold the family garage, Follows and Sons, weeks before dying in a fall down its stairs. In the airport lounge, the detectives question Verena in front of Calvin, then needle him about his father shutting him out of the business he expected to inherit, tying it to the rebuffs from Tara, Bronson and Alisha. Calvin snaps, says he broke his father’s neck, and is taken into custody.
The ending
Spoiler: Verena is checked over and Ivy is called to collect her. One partner admits to feeling almost sorry for Calvin, and the other observes that prison will be full of the gatekeepers he hates.
Suspect’s fate: Calvin Follows, arrested.
