Biography
From the series premiere, “The Key to the Castle,” first aired in 2024, Detective Sergeant Henry Graff partners Frankie Bateman in Toronto’s Major Crime Unit. He keeps a 2010 Filofax and reads Lake Ontario’s currents and an overnight storm well enough to shift the search for a missing crypto founder east, where the body washes up. In “Bleeding Hearts” he borrows his friend Langston James from a Guns and Gangs investigation, and Holness warns him not to do it again.
Graff speaks in “Canadian Dream” of a half-brother he has been estranged from for four years, and in “Tango Romeo” that brother, Miles, proves to be an associate director at CSIS who stonewalls the inquiry into a field officer’s nerve-agent death. Miles raises Graff’s belief that their father played a part in his mother’s death; Graff accuses him of using a golf partner to pull the police in, and Graff himself to win his boss’s job.
Confronting a pathologist before the man’s mother in “Uncertain Justice,” Graff tells him he, too, suffered abuse as a child and hid under the stairs. His family becomes the case in “XOXO,” Aden Young’s last episode in the part: a new Environment Minister falls from her balcony, and her lover is Graff’s father, Charles. Once Graff’s visit to Charles turns too personal, Holness benches him, and the squad learns that he lost his mother, Maggie, in Paris in 1987, at 12; her death was ruled a suicide, he blames his father, and he was then sent to a Toronto boarding school. Bateman takes him through the file until he accepts the ruling and gets him reinstated, and he draws an admission from the minister’s 14-year-old son by talking about the mother he lost at that same age. By “Diplomatico” he has left the unit.
